Dawn comes early, especially during Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, presented by Bridgeston. Last night, however, we feasted very well at the Alltech Press Dinner hosted by Dr. Pearse Lyons at his Alltech Brewery, home of Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale.

Rolex KY 3-Day Event: Early Leaders After 1st Day of Dressage
Friday, April 27 2012

Rolex Kentucky 3-Day Event, presented by Bridgestone: okay, we’re not surprised at all by the early leaders after day one of dressage – after all, the “brand” for Rolex is that crown of excellence!!! In first place, after being next to last to go on Thursday’s dressage schedule, is Remington XXV and Boyd Martin. We’re very pleased to rely on the press release produced by chief press officer Marty Bauman and his Classic Communications staff, considering the lateness of the hour and encroaching exhaustion… Boyd Martin & Remington XXV - all three judges put this duo into first place after day one of dressage. © Beth Harpham/equidigital.com All three judges placed Boyd and Remington XXV first – on a score of 45.3 penalty points. Boyd, 32, (West Grove, PA) said that Remington XXV, 16, was one of the first horses he competed when he moved from his native Australia seven years ago. The Hanoverian gelding, owned by Henley House Stables, had only foxhunted before Martin began working with him. “He’s a good old horse,” said Boyd, grinning. “He’s taken me all around the world now, and it was wonderful to ride a test on a horse who knows what he’s doing.” Boyd rode on his first U.S

Welcome to Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, presented by Bridgestone – and the first day of dressage. We had just enough time to get to the stadium where we took a few pix of Sinead Halpin and “Tate” – Manoir de Carneville, who performed the test ride. Last year they finished third at Rolex, winning the USET Foundation Pinnacle Cup as the highest-placed US rider/horse combination as well as Best Conditioned Horse.

Rolex Kentucky – 57 Horses Will Start
Thursday, April 26 2012
by Editor
The first veterinary inspection took place at Kentucky Horse Park at 3 p.m. today under sunny, balmy skies: 57 of the 58 horses presented were passed by the jury composed of Anne-Mette Binder (Denmark), Michel Assaray (France) and Nick Burton (Great Britain). The jury did not accept Llewellyn, ridden by Brittany Kart (USA), they also held two other horses and accepted them when they re-presented. It was a pretty parade of ponies, all things considered and the riders went all out, fashion-wise. We can’t hope to prognosticate in the same league as Jimmy Wofford, and we will admit with unabashed honesty that often sentiment and friendship drives our partisanship toward certain horses and riders. We certainly have a healthy respect for anyone who gets to the four-star level: it takes guts, determination and over the top horse craziness, but we digress. ROLEX – Jump Start To London Olympics for US Riders
Wednesday, April 25 2012
by Editor
A lot rides on Kentucky Rolex Three-Day Event, sponsored by Bridgestone, April 25-29 at the Kentucky Horse Park. Not only is it the premier four-star this side of the big puddle (Atlantic Ocean), it is THE PLACE where the Selectors for the US 3-Day Olympic Team will be watching the US contenders through high-powered microscopes. Then, too, there is the British invasion to roil the Rolex “waters” as William Fox-Pitt (GBR), 2010 winner of Rolex with Cool Mountain, is slated to ride Parklane Hawk: they won 2011 Burghley, which was Fox-Pitt’s sixth triumph in the testing September four-star.

THE DRESSAGE FOUNDATION’S RENEE ISLER FUND PROVIDES FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR TWO YOUNG RIDERS
Tuesday, April 24 2012
by Editor
Katrina Hiller April 24, 2012 – The Dressage Foundation’s Renee Isler Dressage Support Fund recently provided two scholarships to young riders to support their participation in educational clinics. Katrina Hiller (WI) was accepted by the United States Dressage Federation to participate in the Junior/Young Rider Clinic with Jeremy Steinberg on March 17-18, 2012. However, she needed some financial help to make the trip from Wisconsin to Maryland with her horse, Toy Soldier. Katrina received an $800 scholarship from Renee’s Fund, which enabled her to attend the clinic. “The clinic with Jeremy Steinberg was an incredible experience,” said Katrina. “His methods were effective yet respectful to the horse, and overall made Toy much more supple, active, and rideable. I can’t thank The Dressage Foundation enough for giving me the opportunity to ride for Jeremy!” Annie Adamcyzk Renee’s Fund, which also provides support to young riders and professionals who participate in other educational events, awarded a $325 scholarship to Annie Adamczyk (IL). Annie was selected to participate in the Emerging Dressage Athlete Clinic with Lendon Gray. The event will be held April 28-29 at Legacy USA Equestrian inBurr Ridge,IL. “Receiving this scholarship to ride with Lendon Gray is such an honor. I cannot thank Renee Isler and The Dressage Foundation more for giving me this great opportunity. I am so excited to see how well Storm, my new mare owned by Marilyn Black, and I improve because of this clinic,” said Annie. Since 2008, the Renee Isler Dressage Support Fund has provided nearly $40,000 in grants/scholarships to support young riders, the USDF Jr/YR Clinic Series, and dressage professionals. For more information about this Fund, go to www.dressagefoundation.org/Renee_Isler_Dressage_Support_Fund.htm or contact Jenny Johnson at (402)434-8585 or jenny@dressagefoundation.org

Introductions are in order!
Tuesday, April 24 2012

My very first post as a Sidelines Blogger! I should start by telling you a little bit about me, and of course Tucker, for whom this blog is named. Me and the Wunderkind I am an attorney by trade, though of course if I had to describe myself in a word, it would be “horseperson.” I am, like many of you, a person who tries to arrange the rest of her life so it suits her horse’s needs, but this doesn’t really feel like a sacrifice. I commute an hour to work so that I can live closer to the barn, which makes perfect sense to me. I have two sets of clothes: suits, and breeches. I don’t go on vacation; I horse show. I drive a truck to Court. The contents of my backseat could likely outfit a small stable and could easily accommodate an impromptu ride on a friend’s horse, maybe even a last-minute show. My family rolls their eyes at me when I say I’m going to be late for something, because they already know that I was “at the barn.” Stop me when this sounds familiar. I am proud to consider myself a “working ammie.” You know us, you may even be one of us. We are the ones who pull into the barn to ride at night just as everyone else is putting away their tack, and usually change out of a suit and into breeches in the tack room (or the backseat of a car, or a stall…). We retreat to our cars to join conference calls at horse shows, hoping the rest of the conference can’t hear the loudspeakers. We have our smart phones out at the in-gate responding to email while we wait for the hack. And showing up at work on Monday morning completely exhausted and sore from a weekend of horse showing is totally, and completely, 100% worth it when we think back and smile about that really great round, or the pretty ribbons hanging on our horse’s stall door today. Told you he was awkward And now on to the more interesting part. About Tucker, the love of my life. Tucker is a 17hh Dutch Warmblood, whom I’ve owned since he was a yearling. I bought him in 2002, just before law school with the money I was supposed to be saving to help me through the first year. He was not the prettiest baby I’ve ever seen, and he was afraid of all that moves and doesn’t move. But he was very sweet and a very quick learner, and despite my better judgment, I was head over heels in love with him. In hindsight, buying him was the best decision I’ve ever made. I kept him at a breeding/baby farm about an hour from law school and played with him on the weekends, and he single-handedly maintained my sanity. I broke him myself in the summer of 2005, and then once I graduated law school and could afford a trainer, we started horse showing. We had a rocky few years at the beginning, where my giant, awkward baby tried to learn how to be a hunter, and I tried to be brave and make horse showing fun for him. We’ve still got things to iron out (we probably always will, which is what I love about this sport), but for the most part, Tucker knows his job now and takes really good care of me. He has a big personality (which you’ll learn as we go), and he’s a lot of fun to be around. His disposition makes him the perfect amateur horse — generally level-headed, never holds a grudge, aims to please, and really knows how to take a joke. No matter what else is going on in my life, whenever I think about this horse, my inner pony-crazed child knows I am a very, very lucky girl. The perfect couple? I started blogging about Tucker back in June 2009, so if you’re already hungry for more, you can visit the archives , and for even more fun, you can follow Tucker on facebook . I promise to do my best to entertain you — I’ll tell you about my rides, lessons, horse shows, experiences with Tucker, and try to pass on any hunter/jumper news that interests me. I’ve also recently learned that people occasionally find me quite funny (more on that later), so I’ll do my best to dish out as much humor as possible too. So that’s our story. I’m really looking forward to sharing more of it with you, and I’m honored to be joining the Sidelines group. I can’t wait to tell you about my next ride!

I wish I could whistle.
Monday, April 23 2012
by Editor
I can not whistle. I wish I could, because it would come in very handy as a professional horseman, especially at the ingate after one of my riders has a great round. Because I can’t whistle, I have to whoop, and whooping taken out of context is a very ridiculous act indeed.
