Maddy Darst is another amazing junior Jan Westmark-Allan profled and is also one to watch. Lauren Giannini wrote about the Strawberry Kid and then was on the eventing and foxhunting beat, and visited with Olivia Loiacono and Randall Wiseman. Polo enthusiast or not, do read Danika Rice’s story on Mufasa, a real keeper of a pony, as well as her interview with Kris Bowman (who, incidentally, was editor here at Sidelines before I came along and she found a better job with the USPA.)
I don’t always give enough recognition to our faithful columnists, but be sure to check out Sarah Ward’s My Line “Short Term Memory Loss and Long Term Memories,” Lauren Corey’s Junior
Perspective and of course Lisa Hollister’s Equine Law that is defnitely a cautionary tale this month – when many us have young and inexperienced riders around the barn.
Until next month, Cornelia Henderson

Letter from the Editor
Summertime always brings back memories of long hot days, riding bareback with my friends, taking the horses in ponds for a swim and that clammy feeling of horse-sweat on the seat of my jeans. The summer I was 14, I think I put a saddle on my horse once – the rest of the time it was bareback, no helmet and not a care in the world. There are a couple of songs that can take me back to that time and place so vividly it makes me feel like I still have brown hair.
I never had a pony when I was little, but this issue is all about those wonderful beasties that provide most of us with that frst equine experience. Whether DRPs (Dirty Rotten Ponies) or saints like the Strawberry Kid that has packed her share of kidlets around the shows, ponies have a special place in all our hearts because they’re so darned cute.
Our Side Shots column was a contest this month, for best pony ever, and the six fnalists run the gamut from show pony to backyard darlings. Our pick was Tatreanna Schofeld’s Sienna. (Could it be the pond that conjured up memories of long ago? We won’t tell.)
Of course, it’s not all ponies. Victoria Colvin, our cover girl started on ponies but at the ripe old age of 13, she’s beating the likes of Margie Engle and Kent Farrington in the grand prix.
I was quite the sport back then on Flojo, one of my father’s horses
