Devon Horse Show is Always Special

There’s no other show that quite compares to Devon, and over the years, a ribbon from Devon Horse Show and Country Fair is something to treasure.

Laura Chapot of Neshanic Station, NJ, won two classes on Bradberry, adding a second, a third and a third in the bonus point $50,000 Stake on the fnal Saturday evening to take the Leading Open Jumper Rider title for the fourth time in six years, as well as giving Bradberry his second Open Jumper Championship in two years.

Todd Minikus on Pavarotti, was last to go in the four-horse jump-off of that fnal $50,000 Idle Dice Open Jumper Stake, and had the only clean round to win the class on Saturday evening.

It was Kevin Babington of Gwynedd Valley, PA, on Mark Q, who won the $100,000 Wells Fargo Grand Prix of Devon Thursday evening with a clean round in 46.927.

Callan Solem of Chester Springs, PA, on VDL Torlando, was the only other clean round in the jump-off, fnishing second in 48.272.

“What makes Devon special is the crowd, and the crowd that comes to Devon knows their show jumping,” said Todd Minikus.

Scott Stewart Dominates the Hunters… Again

Scott Stewart of Flemington, NJ, rode his own Touchdown to the championship in Regular Conformation Hunters, accumulating enough points to also make Touchdown the Devon Hunter Grand Champion. Stewart, who said, “Winning at Devon never gets old,” also won Devon Leading Hunter Rider title for an amazing nine years in a row. Victoria Colvin of Loxahatchee, FL, who trains with Stewart, earlier in the week, had ridden Touchdown to the championship in Large Junior Hunters, 15 & under. Tori was named Best Child Rider on a Horse, and also rode Sanzibar to the championship in Small Junior Hunters, 15 & under and won one of the equitation classes on Thursday. Jersey Boy, ridden by Jenifer Alfano of Buffalo, NY, rode SBS Farm’s Jersey Boy to the High Performance Working

Hunter Championship and was the Leading Lady Rider and then on the fnal Sunday won the $25,000, two round, USHJA International Hunter Derby. Owned by Susie Schoellkopf’s SBS Farm, this is the second year in a row that Jersey Boy as won the Hunter Derby at Devon.

Hunt Tosh rode Cold Harbor to the Green Conformation tricolor and Good Humor to the Second Year Green title. Both horses are owned by Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Wheeler of Keswick, VA. John French of Rancho Santa Fe, CA, rode Davlyn Farm’s Come Monday to the First Year Green Championship.

Jane W. Gaston of The Plains, VA, rode her Lumiere to the Amateur Owner Hunter Championship, over 35, and to the Devon GrandAmateur Owner Hunter Championship on the fnal Saturday, June 4th. Gaston won three of the four over fences classes, and the Leading Amateur Owner Hunter Rider title. “I love the size of this ring,” said Gaston. “It’s a big, galloping ring. Devon is already special, but management goes out of their way to make winning special for you. It’s a real reward to win here. If you’ve got your name on a trophy here, you’ve established yourself.”

Chris Richards of Arlington, TN, rode her Foxtrot Echo to the Championship in Adult Amateur Jumpers.

Lucy Matz tops in Ponies

Lucy Matz of Coatesville, PA, rode her mother’s Wise Guy to the Pony Jumper Championship. Lucy, daughter of Michael Matz, trainer of Barbaro and previously a top show jumping rider, and Dorothy (DD) Matz, also a top show jumping rider, not only took the championship but also was awarded the Pony Jumper Style Award. “Wise Guy is really fun, he likes to go fast,” said Lucy, who was riding at Devon for the frst time. “I learned how to make good turns (in the jump-off) by watching videos of Mom and Dad.” Charlotte Jacobs of East Aurora, NY, won the $15,000 Junior Jumper Classic on Karona V Schl’hof Ch at the Devon Horse Show Saturday evening, May 28th, making her mount the Junior Jumper Champion and giving Jacobs the title of Leading Junior Jumper Rider. Jacobs had also won the Equitation Championship on Friday.

Tucker Johnson of Hobe Sound, FL, won the Championship Drive-off of the Carriage Please Drive with his four-in-hand team put to a Brewster Private Road Coach.
