4 SIDELINES OCTOBER 2011
FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE
Letter from
the Editor
When I was a kid, I loved drawing
horses. I drew horses galloping,
standing, eating… I drew bays
and greys and chestnuts and
paints and apps. I found them
an endlessly fascinating subject
for my imagination, and while
I no longer even dabble in art,
my admiration for those who
can capture all things equine on
canvas or paper is vast.
Our cover artist, Andrea Kent,
paints in the styles of centuries
past and I adore her work. Lauren
Giannini’s story tells us how she
arrived at her style in a most
circuitous manner. It’s a great
read.
Jan Westmark-Allan caught up with Sarah Richards,
whose work is fuid, interpretive and accurate – not an easy
combination! Jan also visited with Louise Serio who is one
of the most admired riders out there. (Jan also visited with a
number of other riders, young and old – I know you’ll enjoy
all her interviews.)
Danika Rice caught up with Hollie Boggess, one of those
rare arena players. And contributor Laura Danowski tracked
down Joe and Sandy Johnson, a husband-wife farrier team.
Laura tells me that it was no mean feat catching up with this
busy duo, so my hat is off to her persistence – and meeting
deadline!
On the eventing front, Lauren writes about ACE Private
Risk Services really going the extra mile and donating
$10,000, matched by Bruce Duchossois, co-chair of the
USET Foundation’s Development Committee in memory
of Boyd Martin’s horses that died in a fre. It is a story of
generosity, bravery and an example of the horse community
rallying around following tragedy.
Juniorside columnist Lauren Corey says goodbye to her
partner Petey, and Sarah Ward is excited about Indoors.
Speaking of juniors, we welcome Pony Kids and Junior
Blues submissions – so share what’s happenin’ at your
farm.
