4 SIDELINES FEBRUARY 2012
FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE
but focuses on the beauty of the
sport. Fascinating fellow, he is.
Christine De Herrerra spent
some time with Lientje Schueler,
assistant trainer for Stefan and
Shannon Peters, did a Five Q with
Endel Ots and then tracked down
a couple of cool juniors – Liza
Finsness and Jacob Pope, to be
exact. One busy girl, our Jan.
Laura Danowski checked in
with Ladies of the Night – braiders
of course! What were you
thinking??! Then she surveyed a
bunch of Wellie-worlders on how
to survive the season.
There’s much more, of course.
I just hit the high points as they
came to me. So put the cat on
your lap and settle in to explore
yet another issue of Sidelines. I
know you’ll fnd a lot to read within
these pages.
Until next month,
Cornelia Henderson
Letter from the Editor
What an exciting issue! First of all, we are again
sponsoring the “world famous” Sidelines Tetrathlon. Okay,
so maybe not actually world famous, but defnitely a fxture
in the horse show/dressage/polo and reining world – at
least in Wellington. In this issue you can catch up on what’s
happening with the Tetrathlon, learn of its roots, and meet
some behind the scenes folk who have made it happen.
We are very proud of this special event, and thrilled to be
able to make a signifcant contribution to the Equestrian Aid
Foundation through the Tetrathlon.
But of course, that’s not all. Lauren Giannini’s story, For
the Horses, takes on the ever sensitive issue of unwanted
horses and what can, does and should happen to them. I
know you’ll read this story – and we trust it will help you
better understand the options that are out there for recycled
horses (I’ve always seemed to ride recycled polo ponies
myself…)
We were saddened at press time to learn that Walt “Papa”
Kuhn rode through the big goalposts in the sky, but those
of us who knew him will be telling stories of this magnifcent
larger than life man for many years to come. Walt was
someone special.
DanikaRice introduces us toMark Crislip, an amazing polo
photographer who doesn’t shoot like a sport photographer,
