other artists and luckily my work was
chosen. The sketch of Jag doesn’t
quite show in the film. But he was
there. And as a bonus Jag turned
up on the War Horse caps that were
given to the 600 cast and crew after
filming,” she concluded.
Bannister’s job title for the
movie was ‘Equine Artistic Advisor’
developed into two distinct roles.
One was producing the sketches of
Joey to go into the film and helping
develop a design for his markings.
The other role was more hands-on; as
‘Head of the Equine Hair and Make-
Up Department,’ she was responsible
for the look and continuity of the 250
horses throughout four months of
filming in Britain.
14 horses were used to tell the
story of Joey; nine adult Joeys, two
were foals and the other three were
colts. Bobby Lovgren, head trainer
on War Horse, used one of his own
horses, Finder, who starred in the
2003 film Seabiscuit.
The story of War Horse doesn’t
end there. After winning five Tony
Awards on Broadway last June,
the play is set to tour 20 cities in
the United States as well as Japan,
Australia and Canada. The National
Army Museum is also hosting a War
Horse exhibit through August 2012.
