Gymnastic jumping exercises improve any type of horse, no
matter the discipline. Horses that foxhunt or steeplechase need
to learn the mechanics as much as show hunters, show jumpers
or eventers.
Sidelines:
Of all your accomplishments, given your lifetime
achievement award - what means the most to you?
JCW:
Personally, my greatest achievement is my family. Gail
and I have two daughters and four grandsons. None of them
seems to have the horse bug yet; but the oldest is 10 – that’s a
little early for boys to be horse crazy. I was 13 when I got bitten.
Girls catch the bug a lot younger. All four boys are taking riding
lessons, learning how to ride, but they are also learning to play
tennis, to ski, to swim and to play ice hockey. The two oldest
boys are foxhunting. Both of our daughters ride to hounds - one
with Cheshire, the other with Piedmont.
Professionally: my greatest achievement was my ride on
Carawich in the alternate Olympics in 1980 at Fontainebleau.
I was the frst rider for the team and in the Classic Format the
frst rider was the pathfnder: the team developed its speed
as the team got to know the course through each rider. Each
succeeding rider would go a little faster and usually the most
fexible rider was the fourth, the captain, who that year was
Mike Plumb. In those days that was the plan. But unfortunately
Carawich did not get the memo. He came out of the box and
ran away with me. I had enough horsemanship not to fght with
him. He sensed the intensity of the competition and rose to the
occasion while I kept him balanced and pointed at the next fence.
As soon as I realized that my plan wasn’t going to work, I made
sure that his plan worked. We had the fastest round of the day
and ended up with the silver individual medal.
