18 SIDELINES MAY 2012
FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE
Jan Byyny and Syd Kent
(shown) will contest Rolex.
Inmidair (JR) was headed
to Rolex, but he had a
sore foot. Jan didn’t want
to take any chances, so
she re-directed her plans
for him to go the three-star
at Jersey Fresh or Saumur
in May. Jan debuted at
the four-star level at Rolex
in 2003, fnishing 10th on
the aptly named Shared
Dreams, which put them
on the US team for the
Pan Ams staged at Fair
Hill where they earned
individual bronze and
team gold. In 2004, at the
frst-ever short format Rolex, Jan fnished 6
th
on Task Force and
14
th
on Shared Dreams. She has battled gamely back from a
stroke resulting from a fall two years ago, learning to speak and
regaining her confdence and ability in the saddle. It’s great to
see her smiling face above a pair of horse ears. Read about her
preparations for Rolex as a Featured Rider: rd3de.org

Boyd Martin has made a lot of headlines, not always because
he wanted to, but the fact is that Boyd and Phillip Dutton saved
Neville Bardos from certain death in the tragic barn fre at True
Prospect Farm (PA) on Memorial Day. Nev probably won’t run
at Rolex. This HOTY, the second consecutive one powered by
SmartPak (SmartFlex IV Ultimate, SmartBreathe, SmartOmega,
and SmartLytes Pellets), has already proven himself in every
possible way. Boyd still has great four-star depth with Remington
XXV, Otis Barbotiere and Yin Yang Yo who carried Boyd in his
Rolex debut in 2006. Boyd and Remington (shown) fnished in
9
th
place last year at Rolex and they’ll be looking to do better.
Find out Boyd’s strategy and listen to his great Australian accent
and outrageous sense of humor on the Rolex Course Walk
sponsored by SmartPak.

Team SmartPak
Riders Ready
For Rolex
By Lauren R. Giannini
J
an Byyny, Boyd Martin and Allison Springer are
ready for Rolex. These Team SmartPak riders will
be on hand for signings at the SmartPak booth in
the Sponsor Village, times and dates will be determined
according to dressage ride times. Last year, the Rolex
Cross-Country Course Walk was a phenomenal success.
Boyd and Allison will reprise their roles as course walk
leaders, providing a uniquely educational and entertaining
experience for spectators. It will happen either Thursday,
April 27, or Friday, April 28. Be sure to register a.s.a.p. with
a quick visit to www.smartpakequine.com/coursewalk so
that you’re on the email list that announces the exact time
and date of the Rolex Course Walk.
The horses of Team SmartPak riders harvest the healthy
benefts of their individualized SmartPak supplements.
Busy people on the go are helped by the handy packs that
take the worry of measuring each supplement at feed time,
when horses in stalls are nickering ‘hurry up!’ and rattling
their buckets for emphasis. The daily SmartPaks are
labeled with each horse’s name and sealed tight to retain
freshness until you’re ready to peel and use.
SmartPak offers tack and attire, treats and toys, gifts,
books and CDs, as well as all sorts of practical stable
supplies and equipment needs, including sheets and
blankets. Be sure to drop by the expanded SmartPak
booth in the Sponsor Village during Rolex. Check out the
SmartPak bridles favored by many of your Team SmartPak
equestrian idols.

Allison Springer and
Arthur are planning
a ffth run at Rolex.
With luck the horse
gods will smile on
this talented rider and
horse combination
and they will fnish in
the top 10 of a very
competitive feld. Their
dressage last year put
them in third place,
but were eliminated in
an unfortunate parting
of ways late in the
cross-country. Allison’s
four-star horses get
daily SmartPaks
tailored to their individual needs. They both get SmartFlex
IV Ultimate, SmartDigest Ultra, and SmartLytes. Arthur’s
Pak has SmartCalm Pellets while Destination Known is on
SmartMuscle Mass and SmartBreathe.
