4 SIDELINES AUGUST 2012
FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE
Games in London get
underway. We will
have “gold medal”
coverage on
the
Sidelines website and
Facebook page, so
check there often for
great photos and news
of the Games. If you
are anything like me,
you will also be glued
to your television as an
armchair equestrian.
One of my fondest
memories of watching
the Olympics was the
year that Joe Fargis
and Touch of Class
won the
individual
gold medal. I was so
inspired by their ride
that I immediately went out to the barn, saddled my horse and
jumped a course -- all the while dreaming of my own Olympic
glory. I am hoping that the London Olympics delivers the same
type of inspiration and that kids everywhere have stars in their
eyes and dreams in their hearts.
Enjoy this issue, which not only includes fashion but several
Olympic stories as well.
And don’t miss Lauren
Giannini’s fascinating story
on Hollywood Horse Stars
or Courtney Zimmerman’s
delightful
interview with
Lukas, the World’s Smartest
Horse. Thanks for joining
Sidelines – I hope all of you
have a few stars in your eyes
as we take this ride together.
I’d love to hear from
you. Email me at editor@

Welcome to our annual fashion issue. I will be the frst to
admit I missed out on the “fashion” gene. My daughter, Abby,
is the one with fashion sense in our family. Speaking of Abby,
she wrote the Juniorside column for many years and created
the Windy and Drexel cartoon for Sidelines. She is now back
as a staff writer and we are glad she has returned, bringing not
only her accomplished fashion style, but writing style as well.
For the past several weeks we have been holding the
Sidelines Supermodel Fashion Contest and have received
hundreds of photos – proving that Sidelines readers are not
only well dressed but photogenic, too! It has been thrilling to
see the photos pour in; our judges are going to have a tough
decision narrowing it down to four winners. We will feature the
winners, as well as many of the other supermodel contestants,
in the next issue. It will be better than New York Fashion week!
As part of the Sidelines family I wasn’t allowed to enter the
contest, but I am still
going to share my fashion
style, or lack thereof,
that blossomed years
ago. This photo was
taken circa 1970 with
a horse named Charlie
and I am wearing fared
burgundy jodhpurs while
Charlie sports a giant
ring of fowers around
his neck. My dreams at
this tender age included
becoming an Olympic
champion and although
I’m not sure what class
I won that day, (or why
Charlie looks like he
just won the Kentucky
Derby) but I’m sure I
felt like I won a gold
medal.
Olympic dreams will
be coming true soon,
as the 2012 Olympic
