separately. For example, if your goal is to compete in the
Olympics and become a doctor, both requiring intense work
and focus, achievement of both may require delaying one
goal until achievement of the other. A friend of mine did this
successfully. After high school he focused on his Olympic
dream, which he achieved. After the Olympics he completed
college and attended medical school.
To successfully achieve your goals and dreams, you need
enough time to commit yourself to the work involved in the
process of goal attainment. If you do not know the process,
ask someone who has successfully been down the path you
have chosen. Then, set short, intermediate and long term
(SIL) goals for yourself. These goals should be process and
product oriented. Process goals may include developing a
stronger position, improving confidence and focus, learning
to ride turns or movements well, or a team performing
cohesively.
Product goals are measurable. These include SIL goals
for competing at specific levels of competition, qualifying for

finals and winning.
Goal setting provides a road map and time line for the
achievement of your goals. The time line can always be
adjustable in accordance to your process goals. With goals,
there will always be obstacles.
The obstacles test your commitment to your goals and
can cause frustration, disappointment and slumps. Knowing
how many goals you can realistically achieve is necessary
because of the side effects of obstacles and the time
commitment involved in high goal achievement. Patience, a
time related element of goal commitment and achievement,
is necessary when faced with obstacles.
When trying to achieve too many high achievement goals
at one time, it may be difficult to stay committed to all of them
when faced with obstacles. Instant gratification rarely occurs
in the pursuit of high achievement goals.
To successfully achieve your goals make sure they are
your goals, BELIEVE in your goals, set them in accordance
with what you feel you can realistically handle.
