4 SIDELINES JUNE 2013
FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE
Letter from the Editor
Welcome to the June issue of Sidelines. While this issue
focuses on Education, it also marks my frst full year as Editor-In-
Chief of Sidelines Magazine – talk about an education! It’s been
a whirlwind year and I have learned a great deal, had a wonderful
time and met some amazing people. I look forward to the next
year and all of the adventures that will take place at Sidelines.
One adventure I had this year was accompanying the winner
of our Sidelines Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) Exclusive
Showing Vacation Contest on his trip to Wellington, Florida and
the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center, the home of
WEF. Our winner, Jack Lube, is pictured on our cover and I am
sure he would be the frst to admit his trip to WEF was truly an
education. Make sure you read all about Jack’s adventure in this
issue.
During our weekend at WEF, Jack and I had the chance to
spend some time with George Morris, legendary rider, trainer and
longtime Chef d’Equipe of the United States Olympic show jumping
team. George is considered one of the most infuential riders and
trainers in equestrian sport and is a strong proponent of education.
George gave us insight into what he thinks is the key to success in
the equestrian world, and you probably won’t be surprised to hear
that it has to do with education. “The best weapon is not talent, the
best weapon is education and knowledge,” George said.
While an education at the barn, and in the saddle, is important
for success in the equestrian world, we also take a look at formal
education in this issue. I am blessed to have a great group of
college students who work as interns for Sidelines, and I asked
each of them to write a story about the college they attend. They
all attend colleges with equestrian programs or equestrian teams,
which proves the theory “once a horse person, always a horse
person!” Georgia trainer Stephanie Pair also introduces us to
the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA), an organization
for middle and high school students. We have some exciting
opportunities coming up for IEA riders, including a free critique of
their riding. We defnitely want to provide IEA riders with education
and knowledge!
I am pleased to welcome another new Sidelines columnist to
this issue, a rider who “educated” the equestrian world about

competing in Big Equitation classes. As a junior rider she
appeared on Animal Planet’s “Horsepower: Road to the Maclay”
television show and made history in the Big Eq ring. She then
headed to Brown University (where she juggled showing and
studying) before becoming a professional grand prix show jumper.
If you guessed that our newest columnist is Brianne Goutal, then
you would be correct. If you followed Brianne on the “Road to
Maclay” show, you will love following her column called the “Road
to the Grand Prix.” If you aren’t familiar with Brianne, then I highly
recommend you fnd the Animal Planet DVD’s and watch the
show – it’s a wonderful education into the world of equitation.
Throughout this past year Sidelines has galloped across the
country and we have had a great time introducing you to equestrian
life in the Rocky Mountain States. In this issue we introduce you
to Janet Foy in Colorado and Alice Sarno
in Arizona. Sidelines is also heading to
Spruce Meadows in Canada and writer
Marissa Quigley takes us on our Spruce
Meadows adventure, introducing us to
the show which was rated as the best in
2012 by the North American Riders Group
(NARG). Spruce Meadows, according to
NARG, is “simply sublime” and should be
on every equestrian’s bucket list.
I haven’t been to Spruce Meadows yet –
but I love the adventure of checking things
off my bucket list! The adventure defnitely
continues – and I’m so glad you are along
for the ride!
