4 SIDELINES AUGUST 2013
FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE
Letter from the Editor
The
Sidelines
annual fashion issue is always a stylish adventure
– taking our readers from the hottest looks in the ring to chic and
trendy styles on the runway. If you have a passion for fashion then
you will love this issue because it’s truly a fashionable ride.
Even if you aren’t a trendsetter when it comes to style, I’m sure
you will find inspiration as you flip through our special fashion
section. And maybe it will ignite a passion for fashion and before
you know it you will be rocking the runway – even if the runway is
your barn aisle!
Speaking of having a fashion for passion, the photo of me is
during my 10-year-old equestrian fashionista phase. Well, maybe
not. But I did love wearing my riding clothes and while I may not
be smiling in the photo, I promise you I was thrilled to be dressed
for the barn. My “supermodel” pout probably had something to do
with the fact that stopping to take a photo meant we were wasting
precious seconds that could have been spent with the horses.
As horse people, we know that spending time with the horses
is what it’s all about. As you read the stories in this issue, you will
notice a common theme among the artists and designers – they
are not only passionate about horses, but they find inspiration in
them as well.
I love the “My Story” feature each month – written by a person in
the horse world about their life. Robyn Noble penned this month’s
story and she has both a passion for fashion and for horses.
Her parent’s own a jockey apparel company and thanks to their
inspiration, Robyn’s own line of equestrian clothing is a success.
I think you will enjoy reading her story and discovering how she
thought she wanted to be a jockey when she was young – but the
call of the fashion world won out.
While the equestrian fashion world is full of delightful surprises,
as you will see in this issue, I know many of you love watching the
high-end fashion world, too. If you are a fan of watching celebrities
Jan Westmark-Allan – an equestrian fashionista from an early
age!
on the red carpet, then you have probably seen stars wearing
dresses designed by Badgley Mischka. What you may not know is
that Mark Badgley, half of the famous design team, is a horseman.
Learn more about his life as a fashion designer and an adult
amateur hunter in our story in this issue, including the fact that he
has been known to make his own show jackets for the hunter ring.
In addition to fashion articles, this issue brings all kinds of
summertime fun. From young riders in Colorado to a young
girl who rescued a racehorse, this issue is a great ride. Holly
Hugo-Vidal, who writes our West Side Story column, takes us to
California to meet Peter Lombardo who has found success in the
ring on both the East and West coasts. We also travel to Canada
to meet show jumper Kim Farlinger and to Tryon, North Carolina
to meet eventer Beth Perkins.
Thanks again for being part of the great
Sidelines
adventure and
don’t forget to visit us on our website and on Facebook, too. Next
month we will take a stroll down memory lane as we celebrate our
25th anniversary – 25 years of covering people and horses in the
equestrian world! So saddle up and come along for the ride as we
celebrate how to “Catch the Sidelines Spirit!”
