international riders are competing at the Winter
EquestrianFestival,manyAmerican competitors
scatter throughout the country to various
competitions. The international riders, for the
most part, follow the same circuit throughout
Europe, meaning that I can continuously
compete against the best riders that Europe
has to offer. Also, while some international
riders compete in the U.S., more top American
competitors travel to Europe, which means that
often the highest caliber of competition during
the summer is overseas. This brings a depth
of competition to those shows not often seen
during the summer in the United States. This is
one reason that American show jumpers have
begun to join these competitions.
Competing in Europe also provides a larger
selection of horse shows. While there may be
one or two top grand prix per month in the U.S.,
multiple prestigious competitions are often
taking place every weekend across Europe.
Unlike in the United States where riders typically
stay in a particular region in the summer such
as the Northeast, Kentucky, etc., the European
circuit spans many countries. One week I
could be competing in Germany, and the next
I am in a horse show in Spain. This fast-paced
schedule brings a change of scenery that adds
both excitement and extra motivation. The amazing foods I am
able to taste along the way, from spaghetti to schnitzel, also help
keep all the traveling fun.
Though European horse shows offer some advantages over
competing in the United States, nothing can beat showing at
home. Whether I am competing in New York where I grew up or in
Wellington where I live, I am comforted by my local surroundings.
The presence of my family and friends and the ability to sleep in
my own bed after a competition helps me focus my attention and
perform my best. As Dorothy says, there’s no place like home.
