4 SIDELINES MARCH 2014
FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE
your partnership suddenly changed
because you became paralyzed
from the waist down? That’s exactly
what happened to Cambry Kaylor, a
vaulter who was on her way to the
National Championships. “Life Goes
On…” is a touching and uplifting story
about coming back from a tragedy.
Get ready to be moved as you read
Cambry’s journey. I know her strength
and outlook on life inspired me.
Speaking of being inspired, our
travel story on the Alltech FEI World
Equestrian Games 2014 in Normandy has motivated me to keep
working on my French, just in case I find myself visiting castles,
watching horse-ball (don’t miss our story in this issue on this truly
wild and fascinating sport) and stargazing at the top riders and
horses from around the world who will descend on Normandy
later this year for the Games. You can still make travel plans –
maybe 2014 needs to be your year for a big adventure.
Sidelines
is definitely embarking on a big adventure, as we
are launching a digital version of our magazine. We will still be
in print, but for the technological savvy, you will soon be able
to read
Sidelines
on your iPad, Android tablet, Kindle and on
smartphones. The digital edition will feature new columnists and
lots of bells and whistles that digital magazines are known for
– Sidelines TV videos, links to websites and Facebook pages,
extra photos, rider and trainer videos and so much more. The
digital edition will be included with your print subscription, so
there’s no time like the present to buy or renew your subscription.
I encourage you now to Catch the Sidelines Spirit and ride along
on our adventure.

Letter from the Editor
It’s always exciting to have an Olympic gold medalist on our
cover! Canadian show jumper Eric Lamaze has a great story and
I know you will enjoy reading about his life – from his early career
to his gold medal days with his great equine partner Hickstead.
With a string of talented new horses in his barn, Eric’s future is
looking bright and hopefully we will see him on the medal podium
soon.
As a teenager, Eric spent time in the United States as a
working student for George Morris. Many of our top equestrians,
including numerous Olympic riders, have ridden with George
and much has been written about the legendary rider and trainer.
In this issue of
Sidelines
, George turns the tables and does the
writing. As the President of the Show Jumping Hall of Fame and
Museum, located at the Kentucky Horse Park, George shares
about the importance of preserving our sport’s legacy. I have
visited the Show Jumping Hall of Fame and Museum many times
and have always found it fascinating and a great stroll down
memory lane. If you are in the Lexington area, stop by the horse
park – it’s worth the trip.
While George has quite the reputation for being a taskmaster,
many up-and-coming riders would still love the chance to ride
under his tutelage. Don’t miss the story on Oakley Clark, a
young rider from Vermont who is getting that chance. Oakley
said working with George is “a little bit intimidating.” I can only
imagine! This issue of
Sidelines
is filled with stories on people
who have ridden with George, including adult amateur rider
BettyAnn Kolba who began riding with George when she was in
college and George’s longtime friend Jimmy Lee.
Talented rider Tori Colvin has graced our cover in the
past, and we check back in with her in our story, titled “The
Extraordinary Tori Colvin.” I enjoyed the behind-the-scenes look
at Tori’s life, including her partnerships with her horses. Forming
a trusting and healthy relationship with our horses is what our
sport is all about. Imagine what would happen, however, if

Thank You
Dani Moritz
I wanted to let you know that I am so thankful for the
outstanding job Dani Moritz did on the article (February
issue - “Jordan LaPlaca: Passion Meets Partnership”). I
am overwhelmed with joy that you really made it sound
like who I am! I have gotten such incredible feed back – all
positive and heart warming! Thank you so much!

Kudos to
Lauren Giannini
I just wanted to thank you again for the coverage of
Popeye in the stallion issue for
Sidelines
(January issue –
“Popeye – Great Sire In A Smaller Package”). I was very
impressed with the effort Lauren Giannini put into making
the article a comprehensive story. It’s some of the best
writing I’ve seen in an article like that in a long time. Kudos
to her and thank you again!

Musical Notes
Just wanted to say I LOVED the article about Jean
Kopperud in the latest issue of
Sidelines
Magazine
(February issue – “Jean Kopperud’s Balancing Act”). I
studied clarinet for many years and it was wonderful to
hear all about her accolades in both the horse industry
and musically.

I just wanted to let you know that I REALLY enjoyed this
issue, especially the article about Leslie Webb (February
issue – “Weaving A Web With Leslie Webb”) and so many
others too.
