Deep in the heart of Texas, colleges vied for the 2013 National
Intercollegiate Championship title in April, hosted by Texas A&M
University. Colleges competing at the event were regional winners
Westmont College, Washington State University, Colorado State
University, University of Virginia, Cornell University and wildcard
men’s team Southern Methodist University. For the first time
ever, the NIC tournament was located at ERG’s arena, graciously
donated by Scott Wood, in Brookshire, Texas.
Westmont College became the men’s NIC Champions, winning
their first-ever intercollegiate title, with a 19-16 win over Colorado
State University. A two point conversion by Kareem Rosser of
CSU tied the score within the last minutes of the fourth chukker,
keeping the match exhilarating until the final horn. In the last
eight years, Westmont qualified for the national intercollegiate
tournament seven times and played in the national finals three
times.
The women’s match was equally exciting as University of
Virginia defeated Cornell University women in a nail biter shootout
10-9 to defend their national championship title for a second
consecutive year. The winning shootout goal was scored by Kylie
Sheehan. This is the seventh national title that UVA women have
earned.
National Men’s All Stars were Felipe Viana (UVA), Ford
MacCarty (CSU), Patrick Uretz (Westmont) and Tony Uretz
(Westmont). National Women’s All Stars were Kylie Sheehan
(UVA), Kailey Eldredge (Cornell), Isabella Wolf (UVA) and Anna
Winslow (Cornell). Nik Feldman (Cornell) and Rachel Sullivan
(Washington State University) won the sportsmanship awards.
Texas Tech claimed the best playing men’s string and SMU’s
‘Menina’ won the men’s best playing pony award. Texas A&M
University received best playing women’s string. ‘Sunshine’ of
the A&M string and ‘Tiva’ from University of Texas shared the
women’s best playing pony honors.
Horses for the tournament were brought from across Texas by
Southern Methodist University, Texas Tech University, University
of Texas, Texas A&M University, Prestonwood Polo Club, Mark
Prinsloo, Chad Bowman and Billy Mudra.
