96 SIDELINES AUGUST 2013
FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE
for seven years, which encompasses over 100 episodes all over
the USA and in Europe. However, from a creative producer
standpoint I really enjoyed brainstorming for both the “Modern
Day Cowboy” and “It’s Reining. It’s Pouring.” episodes. From an
acting standpoint, I loved shooting both the cowboy stand off
scene as well as the umbrella toss intro. Of course I’ve really
enjoyed interviewing so many talented Olympians across a
variety of disciplines.
If you didn’t ride dressage, what would you do?
I am really interested in reining and love all the people I’ve
met in the reining industry. It’s so close to dressage and they
have a musical freestyle as well. If I had to pick a sport that’s not
equestrian related I’d definitely say studying dance again. I love
to dance and love music so getting back into hip hop as well as
revisiting the more classical styles of street jazz would be how
I’d continue as an athlete.
You recently launched a fitness DVD. Is it geared toward a
certain level?
Like the development of the original web series, I felt the
time was ripe for the release of a workout video that just about
anyone at any level could do, almost anywhere they were that
was geared towards equestrians and core strength
but
didn’t
need a strong pocketbook in order to buy. So, I developed
the equibarre (
workout and we priced it
in line with mainstream market fitness DVDs. It is growing in
popularity with equestrians and getting some super reviews and
likewise it has crossed over to mainstreamers just looking for an
uncomplicated core workout.
Your first novel is about to be published this year. What
can you tell us about it?
I’ve always been amazed at some of the wild things that
happen in the horse world. I’ve been first hand involved in
experiences that seem too
wacky to be anything but
fiction. I’ve actually wanted
to be an author for most of
my life so when the story with
Jess, Rodrik, Enzo and Tulin
came to me, I thought it was
too rich not to share. The
story quickly grew beyond
where I’d started so we’ve
broken it down in a three-part
series thus far. I do also have
a general audience novel I’ve
been developing since 2002
and it seems like the world is
in a place where it’s ready to
hear this story so that’s my
next big push. It follows the
absurdity of some dotcom
entrepreneurs.
About the writer: Kathryn Collins
isn’t a horse girl but loves all things
HorseGirlTV®. She can type like
a bagillion words a minute and is
keen on managing the HorseGirlTV
press
releases,
organizing
interviews and production not
to mention spearheading the
distribution department. She is a
Dooney & Bourke 1975 fanatic and
makes a mad cappuccino!
In the early 2000s, Angelea made a move and worked in the
entertainment industry as a professional dancer, actor, as well as
a production coordinator while spending several whirlwind years
living in the hills of Los Angeles. She has competed successfully
in dressage through Grand Prix and has trained with top stateside
riders across both coasts as well as extensively in Holland
studying the systematic style of many Olympic Champions.
In 2007 she made two major changes in her life; she created
the original web series HorseGirlTV® and she married an Officer
in the US Marine Corps. Producing HorseGirlTV, Angelea
creates unique, original, relevant content for horse lovers with
the mission to bring the wonderful world of horses to mainstream
audiences and enrich the horse industry. Home now is a quaint
private stable on the east coast, which she calls her Dutch-
inspired ongoing development project.
Describe what you do for HorseGirlTV?
When people at social gatherings ask me what I do, I jokingly
tell them I’m a CEO, or Chief Equine Officer, for HorseGirlTV,
but what I actually do is write, host and produce the original
series. In my spare time I train dressage and write. Most of our
interviewees fly or drive in so we shoot much of the series here
at the HQ therefore my traveling has significantly decreased. I
actually spend a significant amount of time working in my office
answering fan mail and writing.
Tell us a little more about your riding career.
I am an FEI-level dressage competitor and trained extensively
with Anky van Grunsven in the Netherlands. I earned my U.S.
Dressage Federation gold medal and my current riding goal is
to compete at the CDIs with Hansel, a gelding I imported as an
unbroken 4-year-old in December 2009.
What’s your favorite episode in the HorseGirlTV series?
This is seriously a tough question. I’ve been hosting the series
