112 SIDELINES JUNE 2014
FORHORSEPEOPLE • ABOUTHORSEPEOPLE
By JanWestmark
The world has gone hi-tech,
and the horse world hasn’t
been left behind. Horse people
everywhere have saddled up
and are enjoying a brand new
horseworld.
Sidelines
Magazine
is no exception – a fewmonths
ago we rolled out our
Sidelines
digital magazine and now
readers can enjoy us in print or
on their smartphones or tablets!
During the 2014 Winter
Equestrian Festival (WEF),
our subscription manager was
walking around the WEF show
grounds wearing a
Sidelines
shirt and several people
stopped her and told her how
much they loved reading us on
their smartphones while waiting
for their classes tostart. Yes, it’s
abrand new horseworld!
Ask any “old timer” about the
horse world years ago (and we
aren’t talking too many years
ago) and you’ll find owning
horses and riding or showing
was a very different place. If
someone talked about getting
an app, they were talking about an Appaloosa – a horse of the
spotted variety! Obviously, today, an app is short for application
and is a piece of software that runs on electronic devices and
allows us to be entertained for hours by reading, playing games
and watching YouTube videos ’til we suddenly remember the
horses need to be fed and the stalls need to be cleaned!
Back in the day, before the horse world went hi-tech, we
couldn’t buy clothes that weremade of super-amazingmaterials
that wicked the sweat away. No, you had to sweat it out as you
rode your horse or worked in the barn. If you were at a horse

show competing, you couldn’t check
a digital screen for your order of
go, and you certainly couldn’t live
stream amajor horse show that was
taking place somewhere else in the
country, which of course we all do
today. I, for one, was very happy to
watch the American Invitational this
year from the comfort of my living
room!
Myassistant editor, DaniMoritz, is
a youngster (let’s compare her to a
yearling) and she said she wouldn’t
consider purchasing a new horse
unless she was able to watch a
video of the horse before she went
to see it. I can remember driving
half way across the country to see
a horse when I wasn’t even sure
what it looked like. Times sure have
changed.
If you haven’t jumped on the hi-
tech horse wagon yet, then there’s
no time like the present. If you
already have a print subscription
to
Sidelines
, then our digital edition
is free. Just download the app and
start reading. If you only want the
digital edition, we’re running a
special to get one year of digital for
only $5. Head to our website, www.
sidelinesnews.com, and click on the link for “subscriptions” then
click on “to subscribe.” Use the coupon code

one-year digital subscription for only $5.
As the old timers would say, “don’t squabble about spending
one Abraham Lincoln” (if you don’t understand that, then google
it!) – because it’s an investment in the brand new, hi-tech horse
world. Anddon’t getmestartedonwhatweused tobeable tobuy
for $5 back in the day. I’m sure if we checked around we could
find someone who bought an app for $5 – an app of the spotted
variety!
AnApp downloaded theapp and enjoys the
Sidelines
digital
edition.
