a new career. Both organizations, each serving a slightly different
purpose, each extremely dedicated to racehorses, depend on
donations and grants in order to continue their good work.
“The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Foundation put together a
great board and they developed the funding model for those within
the industry,” said James. “When you register a Thoroughbred foal,
$25 goes to TAA. When you sell a horse, 50 cents per each $1,000
of the purchase price goes to TAA —it adds up. All but 26 of the top
100 stallions are supporting TAA, donating 25 percent of one of their
advertised seasons, aka stud fees. Some of the ones that aren’t
donating stand in Japan and other places. We’re constantly working
on a greater percentage of participation.”
