My Line columnist Sarah Ward and beau Ryan Ridenour at the Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show. She and Sarah Orberson Taylor are still laughing about showing up in the exact same outfits… hey, same name, why not same clothes?

Catching up:  It was nice to see Joe Quattrocchi back at ringside after a long absence.  Joe is in the insurance business and has two sons and in living in the Carolinas.  Hopefully we will see Joe back in the saddle someday soon.

Bobby Murphy certainly is creative.  His USHJA Hunter Derby Finals’ course was about as imaginative as you will ever find and it looked absolutely beautiful.

Congratulations to Shannon Miglarese of Bethesda, Maryland, who was named Youth Ambassador of the 2011 Washington International Horse Show.  Shannon will serve as the third WIHS Youth Ambassador following Jamal Brown and Anna Rossi.  Shannon was a member of the WIHS Junior Committee last year and served as an intern for WIHS Kids’ Day.  She also is a JustWorld International Ambassador.

Dougie Mutch’s Gracie Street and Cross Gate Gallery are teaming up to do the interiors of some of the hospitality areas at the Alltech National Horse Show.  The plans are “over the top” and this is sure to e one of the ANHS’s hopping places to hang out.  Also, Pearse’s Place – an Irish Pub will be installed in the Alltech Arena.  It won’t be like Harry O’s of days of old but it is certain to be the next best thing.

Louise Serio is soon to be back in business!  Her ankle is healing well and she plans to be back in the saddle in time for the indoor circuit. While she was on the mend, she chatted with Sidelines – so do check out her interview in this issue.

Our former Junior Perspective columnist, Catie Staszak checked in with us recently from college, where she is (no surprise) a broadcast journalism major.  “Working and writing with you was the best experience I could have asked for; it has prepared me so much for my journalism classes in college and given my résumé an edge over others of students my age.  I can’t thank you enough, really!” says Catie.   Needless to say we love hearing that.  Catie is still getting some riding in with her trainer Alan Korotkin and also some on-air time with her college’s sports show “SportsDesk,” which is broadcast campus wide as well as throughout Miami-Dade county.

Bet you didn’t know that the Young Riders Tour this year in Europe was entirely underwritten by the US Equestrian Team Foundation and the USET says they will continue to fund this tour in future years.

Have you been wondering who will be the next President of the United States Equestrian Federation?   We have too, since David O’Connor is stepping down after the London Games to take on the roll of Three Day Event coach.  Rumor abounds about who will be the heir apparent – Bill Moroney, Chyrs Tauber, Armand Leone and Mason Phelps are all names that are being muttered at ringside.  Who knows what is fact or fiction; we will keep you in the loop as the saga unfolds.

Bumps and Bruises:  Hap Hansen broke his femur in a fall at Blenheim. It was the first class, first ride for him, and the first jump.  Talk about a lousy start of the day!  Three pins to secure the break, but nothing keeps this wonderful man down.

Horse Show News:  The Texas High Performance Series in the spring has really stepped up with their prize money.  Sounds like they are going to have over half a million dollars in prize money!  You go guys, Houston here we come.

A Nations Cup at the Alltech National Horse Show in 2012?  That seems to be the talk.  And a Hunter Derby and Saddle Horses too!

Pick up your copy of Sidelines now available at Chapters/Indigo Bookstores in Canada.  Sidelines will be available at the Spruce Meadows Masters Tournaments in Calgary, Canada this fall, as well as The Royal Winter Fair and Horse Show in Toronto this coming November.  You can also find us at many Barnes & Noble bookstores, tack shops and horse shows throughout the US.

Guess who is competing in the 36th Annual Hampton Horse Show’s 5 Year-Old Young Jumper Championships on August 31?  None other than Geoff Case, Head Trainer and Equestrian Manager of the Sleepy Hollow Stables in Scarborough, New York, who will ride the young Rubix, perhaps to glory, as part of the week-long, world equestrian competition. And wouldn’t winning be great timing too to help celebrate Sleepy Hollow Country Club’s centennial year?

Marie Meyers has been around the world because of Marie Meyers has been around the world because of dressage, but it’s her farm in Moorpark, California, that has captured her heart. The farm and the business that thrives there represent Marie’s lifelong journey—a journey made up of good friends, spectacular horses and relationships made to last.

Marie was raised in Southern California, and spent her childhood playing just about every sport under the sun, but she didn’t discover riding until she was 14 years old. “I loved animals so much, so I started taking lessons. I did jumping at first, but I was very bad at that, for sure!” Marie laughed.

After some time, Marie moved on to take lessons at Foxfield Riding Academy and began riding dressage. “I fell into dressage by accident,” Marie said, “At the beginning, I thought it was extremely boring, but then I got hooked. By the time I graduated from high school, I had plans to travel to England to work for Franz Rochowansky, a former head of the Spanish Riding School.”

In 1988, Marie’s hard work paid off, and the pair was selected as alternates for the 1988 Summer Olympic Games. “They didn’t take the alternates that year, so we didn’t go to Seoul, but the experience, the training and the European Tour afterwards set me up for the 1990 World Equestrian Games in Stockholm, Sweden,” Marie said.

In addition to having success representing her country, Marie was busy with her life—marriage, a business, teaching lessons and clinics.
