Olympic Observation Events at the Devon Horse Show & Country Fair

Tuesday, April 10 2012 by Editor
DEVON, Pa.—The ticket office for the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair opens April 9, and with top Olympic hopefuls competing in two Observation Events at this year’s show, getting reservations early is very important. At least three of the eight top riders on the long list of candidates for the London Olympics show jumping team have said they will compete in the Observation classes at Devon, May 24 to June 3. Mclain Ward on Sapphire and Antares F were given a bye for the first selection trials held in Wellington, Fla., March 21-24 after Ward fractured his knee in a fall early in the season in Wellington. But as a late March Ward was already back riding on the flat and expects to be ready for competition by Devon. He will have to use the two Devon classes to convince selectors that he and his mounts, Sapphire and Antares F are fit and able to compete in London. The first is the Grand Prix at 8 p.m

Liz Halliday begins Eventing season with victory at Tweseldown

Friday, April 06 2012 by Editor
Professional dual sportswoman Liz Halliday began her 2012 Eventing season in perfect fashion last month (March 8th) with a thoroughly pleasing victory for Benny (Benaughlin Little Hero) capping an excellent day at Tweseldown. The British-based Californian attended the event with five horses of varying experience and was encouraged by their competitive performances and the strong results achieved across the classes. Most gratifying was a superb win for five-year-old Benny, who belied his lack of competition experience to triumph in the BE100 class

Southern 8ths Farm is Gearing up for its So8ths/Nikon Three-Day Event

Wednesday, March 14 2012 by Editor
The wheels are in full gear at Southern 8ths Farm in Chesterfield, SC, as the farm prepares to host its second annual So8ths/Nikon Three-Day Event in the “Heart of the Carolinas.”  Behind-the-scenes the hum is constant from the equipment that is readying the Roads & Tracks, arenas and other parts of the farm where riders will venture during the competition May 3-6. A mighty group. Yet, that’s not all. Jumps are being repaired and painted, the stalls are being prepped, and arrangements are being made with some of the top clinicians who will help prepare the competitors.  Owner of Southern 8ths Farm, Brad Turley is making sure every “i” is dotted and “t” is crossed as he and his staff prepares his farm to host its second annual event

It’s hard to get Tony Sgarlata to talk about him It’s hard to get Tony Sgarlata to talk about himself—much easier, in fact, to get him talking about horses, his dogs or the people in his life. That doesn’t mean he and his career aren’t worth celebrating. Tony is an accomplished rider, and in the course of 20 years of running his own business has trained horses and ponies to all levels and coached multiple zone and national champions. He is a strong proponent for the sport, giving back as a clinician and USEF “R” judge. Last year, Tony partnered with the USHJA to help riders understand changes to equitation tests for 2023. He has judged throughout North America, including at WEF, Tryon, Lake Placid, Old Salem and more. When he’s not traveling to judge, Tony can be found at home in Raleigh, North Carolina, with his partner, Brian, and their three dogs, or traveling the world, sans dogs. Taylor Manning was a very determined 11-year-old w Taylor Manning was a very determined 11-year-old with a plan when she called her parents into their family living room one afternoon. Unbeknownst to them, she had decided she wanted to ride horses and had researched everything she might need to know about the sport. She was so excited for her pitch that she compiled a PowerPoint presentation and had it waiting when she asked them into the living room that fateful day. “She had researched what it takes to buy, care for, and board a horse,” said her mother, Laura. “At the end of the session, we told her we loved her to death but there was no way we were investing that kind of money! I thought that was the end of the discussion.” Too resolved to give up, Taylor continued her investigations and began calling barns around the Houston, Texas, area where she lived in an effort to find a place that would let her work in exchange for lessons. She received more than a few “no thank you's,” but her tenacity paid off. “Two weeks later, one trainer was so impressed by her drive and ambition that she said yes,” Laura recalled. “We talked and came up with a plan. Taylor was only 11, so the plan was that we would pay for two lessons and Taylor would work for two.” Get to know Taylor in last month's edition of Sidelines Magazine! And keep your eyes 👀 out for the December Hottest Horseman edition!!!
