Wednesday evening, May 29, at the Dixon Oval, featured a grab-bag of events designed to enlighten and entertain spectators who think of The Devon Horse Show as primarily a hunter/jumper venue. But it is much more than that, and in fact the logo of the show, founded in 1896, is a hackney pony reflecting the show’s origins in the meeting of wealthy landowners on “The Main Line” to improve the quality of horses and ponies pulling carriages and buggies. Equestrian disciplines competing at The Show are as varied as Saddlebreds, Roadsters (trotting horses), Hackney Horses and Ponies, Friesians, Coaching and Carriage Pleasure Driving in addition to Hunters, Jumpers and Equitation. There is a thriving Country Fair in conjunction with The Show featuring 63 vendors of all sorts selling clothes, hats, jewelry, furniture, toys, games, pottery and antiques, food, arcade games, a ferris wheel and a merry go round. Dressage in honored with a six day show of its own in the September. So when 7:00 rolled around on Wednesday evening there was a full schedule of events including jumpers, side saddle, hackney ponies, five and three gaited horses and coaching. Buried within that list was class 366, the Five Gaited Special at 9:20 P.M. The organizers had put together a class bound to get some attention. Riding “five gaited horses” were 5 of the top jumper riders in the country

Return Fire – Available for Adoption!
Thursday, February 28 2013

4 year old, 16hh Thoroughbred gelding “Return Fire” is now available for adoption from our Marysville, Ohio facility! There is one word for this cute gelding- lazy. His favorite gear is standing still watching the world go by which means no need to teach him to stand quietly at the mounting block-he has that down pat! It’s the going to work after that that he questions the need for. The first few minutes of the ride are spend winding him up and convincing him everything is going to be okay and then he goes to work. We haven’t had the opportunity to ride outside due to weather, but I am sure he will be more forward outdoors where he is in his comfort zone. It all comes down to him being young minded and not very worldly even though he did have 5 starts at the track. He will need a rider that can bring along a very green horse that has great basics, but needs a firm but confident leader. Under saddle he is light to ride and is short backed enough to be balanced and athletic.

Wednesday, February 20 2013

Hunters, Jumpers, Dressage, Foxhunting, Trails, Therapy, or Mounted Patrol, most retired racehorses fill the role of personal mount in one way or another. Though a few of racing’s stars have smeared paper with a painted nose to benefit charities, Metro Meteor may be the first retired racehorse to become a professional artist! Metro had a long successful career at the track. He was stakes placed at two and again at five winning nearly $300,000

Making the Cut

Recently, Augusta, Georgia hosted the first leg of the Mercuria NCHA (National Cutting Horse Association) World Series of Cutting. The competive event will then move through Texas, Canada, Idaho, California, Ohio and Lyon, France before the end of 2013. TheNCHA, with 16,000 members nationwide, falls somewhere between eventing (USEA) with 12,000 members and dressage (USDA) with 30,000 members so it represents a significant number of competitors nationwide although membership tends to be clustered in regions where the sport first sprang up.
