HOMETOWN HORSEMEN RETURN FROM NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS TO DEFEND TITLES AT JUMP FOR THE CHILDREN, NOV. 3–8, 2015
The 2014 Jump for the Children Horse Show saw all three of its major classes—worth $70,000 in prize money—won by hometown favorites. All three of those horsemen will return to defend their titles at the 2015 USEF Premier–rated horse show, which benefits Duke Children’s Hospital.
The 2014 $10,000 Welcome Stake was won by New Hill equine veterinarian Dr. Fernando Cardenas Jr. on his family-bred stallion—and local favorite in his own right—Quincy Car. Longtime Moore County resident Harold Chopping and Camaro, owned by Caroline Russell Howe, won the $10,000 USJHA International Hunter Derby. And Kyle Timm on Apex Equestrian Center’s Platinum won the $50,000 Duke Children’s Grand Prix.

All three teams have seen big success on the national and international stage since the 2014 show!
Cardenas, Welcome Stake winner, will come to the November show fresh from the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada, where he represented Colombia. Cardenas and Quincy Car finished 5th with team Colombia in team show jumping and tied for 11th in individual competition. These results qualify him and Quincy Car for the show jumping competition at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Hunter Derby winner Chopping and Camaro finished 5th out of 64 horses at the $500,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix on Sept. 6, 2015, in Saugerties, NY. In the unique competition format, 3 rounds were held over a 3-day period; scores from the first 2 rounds were combined and the top 25 moved on to the third day with a clean slate. Chopping also shows 2 young jumpers that he expects to compete in the Duke Children’s Grand Prix—9-year-old Basje and 7-year-old Contefino 6.
Grand Prix winners, Timm and Platinum, have gone on to their most successful season to date, including a big win at the Tryon (NC) Equestrian Center 1.50m international grand prix in July 2015. But, Timm admits, Platinum’s schedule has been built around defending her Jump for the Children title. He also plans to show several jumpers in the other Jump for the Children jumper’s classes.
It promises to be an exciting and intense week of competition at the Governor James B. Hunt Jr. Horse Complex in Raleigh, NC. Spectators are welcome, and admission is free except for the grand prix Saturday night. Don’t miss a minute of the fun!
