Halliday returns to winning ways at Tweseldown

Liz Halliday ” Absolutely thrilled with HHS Cooley for winning the CIC* international at Brightling Park “

A superb showing from one of Chailey Stud’s most promising young horses helped Liz Halliday record a commanding victory in the recent One Day Event at Tweseldown in Hampshire (July 3-5).

The professional dual sportswoman was eager for Benny (Benaughlin Little Hero) to step-up to the BE100 Plus class in order to assess how he coped with the upgraded Dressage test and Show Jumping, and he did not disappoint.

Seemingly unfazed, Benny produced the second best Dressage performance of the day by recording a score of 24.5 before effortlessly going clear in the Show Jumping arena. A similarly faultless Cross Country performance over difficult ground conditions capped a tremendous event for the pair who notched up their third win of the season by an impressive margin of 7.5 points.

Cooley (HHS Cooley) also enjoyed a solid Novice outing en route to a fourth place finish. A typically classy performance in the Dressage arena coupled with a clear Show Jumping round saw the pair well placed heading into the Cross Country. But with the going heavy after so much rain, Liz opted for a more conservative approach and the resulting time penalties, although small, were enough to see them just miss out on a top-three result.

One of Chailey Stud’s more established members also in action at Tweseldown was Fox who enjoyed an outing in the Intermediate section. Decent showings in the Dressage and Show Jumping would ultimately go unrewarded however after a rein snapped during the Cross Country roughly halfway around the course. Fortunately Liz’s strong bond with the horse likely prevented a serious accident after Fox calmly pulled up not long after the incident occurred.

In other news, Trevor (Endymion Entrechat) successfully qualified for the British Novice Championships after finishing 10th in an Intermediate section at the recent Salperton Horse Trials (23/24 June).

Trevor’s excellent season had seen him accumulate enough points to be eligible for the finals at Gatcombe provided he could complete Salperton’s Intermediate course inside the qualifying parameters. A strong ride from Liz helped the pair easily make the grade even if the subsequent poor weather has led to the Championships being postponed.

Liz Halliday: “Yet again I was left absolutely delighted with Benny’s performance in what were difficult conditions under foot at Tweseldown. He was just fantastic throughout the event and looks ready for the move up to Novice, which will happen in the next two weeks. Cooley was also impressive but I felt it wasn’t right to push him too hard around the heavy Cross Country course. I know what he’s capable of however and I’m sure there will be more to come. It’s a shame that Fox’s rein snapped but these things happen. He really loves going Cross Country so I’m more disappointed for him than anything else!”

Meanwhile, last Sunday saw Liz enjoy a very successful outing at Brightling Park International Horse Trials, news of which will be distributed in the coming days.

Finally, don’t forget to tune in for live coverage of the Hickstead Eventing Grand Prix live on Sky Sports 2 tomorrow from 14:30 UK time (highlights at 20:00) when Liz and Fox, not to mention a host of top event riders and Show Jumpers, go head-to-head against the clock around a challenging Show Jumping and Cross Country course.
