DIRECTOR OF RIDING – GARRISON FOREST SCHOOL IS AN INDEPENDENT GIRLS’ DAY AND BOARDING SCHOOL LOCATED IN THE GREENSPRING VALLEY OF MARYLAND, minutes northwest of Baltimore City. The Riding facilities are on a 110-acre campus and consist of a 44-stall barn and a 100’ x 200’ indoor polo arena. Additionally, there is a 46-stall barn with an adjoining 120’ x 225’ indoor riding arena. Facilities also include two large outdoor sand rings, a dressage ring, and several paddocks for turnout including a 30-acre field. Garrison Forest School is seeking a highly experienced Director of Riding with training experience in Hunters, Jumpers and Equitation. The candidate should have extensive experience showing and managing an active clientele. Must be comfortable working with all ages and can meet the needs of students with a wide variety of riding goals and experience from recreational to competition and horse ownership. The position requires the Director of Riding to work evenings, weekends, occasional holidays and travel to shows. Qualified instructors should have competition experience at the “A” level and a sound knowledge of horse care. All training certificates are encouraged. This position reports to the Assistant Head of School for Finance and Operations. The primary focus of the Riding Program is Hunter Seat Equitation. Students participate in horse shows at the local and upper levels, including A shows. Show-Jumping and Eventing are also offered on a limited basis. The aim is to teach girls to become self-sufficient riders and to do all of their own tacking up, grooming, and preparation for competition and daily riding. The Director of Riding develops and implements work methods and procedures of all phases of equestrian operations, including but not limited to, creating, managing and tracking the equestrian budget; barn rental operations; assisting in creating and managing revenue opportunities associated with the program; home equestrian shows; team management, travel and training at shows; equine health, welfare and management with the barn manager. The Director will conduct ongoing training and conditioning of the horses, oversee the daily maintenance of the barn and facilities, as well as make suggestions for long-term maintenance; manage staff; work with the Polo Coach; train students; and is responsible for acquisition and dispersal of horses. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated solid horsemanship skills, advanced level riding and coaching skills, experience with equine management, strong administrative and organizational skills and the ability to foster a cohesive team environment, allowing team members to learn and grow professionally in a school environment.
