The Hamburg Derby

Hello everyone! I hope you are enjoying your day wherever this blog finds you. Today I had the chance to visit annual Hamburg Derby just outside the city center. The field was full of super stars form all over the world including Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum, Richard Spooner, and Nick Skelton. The grass derby field was immaculate with freshly painted jumps, beautiful flowers, and trees that created a very “European” ambiance. Horse shows in Germany have a certain feel to them, one that is inviting and casual yet always organized

Equestrian Yogi

Six months ago, if someone had mentioned yoga, I would instantly have zoned out and a dream bubble would have appeared in which I would be nestled on my couch wearing my yoga pants probably watching reruns of Friends , definitely eating Häagen-Dazs Rocky Road. Is it just me, or is the remote always a few inches beyond your grasp when you need it!? What’s up with that?

A Sunday in Hamburg: The Harbor Birthday and The Storage City
Monday, May 14 2012

Hello everyone, I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! A weekend away from the horses allowed me to discover my new favorite European city…HAMBURG! The food Hamburg offers is absolutely amazing with so many choices I could eat at a different restaurant every night for a year! The people of Hamburg are friendly, warm, and extremely patient when it comes to someone learning a new language like ME! Hamburg has so many sites to see, this weekend I chose The Harbor Birthday Celebration and the Storage City. Hamburg’s Harbor is the largest in Europe and is the main exit and entry hub for all the trading goods. The old Speicherstadt which literally means ”storage city” is an incredible city quarter of Hamburg. It used to be the inventory space for items traded like rugs, carpet, textiles, and tea.

End-of-Year Team Dinner

It always seems that, no matter how much time I spending counting down ‘til the end of the school year, it manages to sneak up on me. As each semester winds down, I try to stay on top of my mounting workload. I have yet to master this endeavor. So this particular blog is brought to you in the lull that follows the chaotic terminal weeks of the school year
If our horses were gorillas.

Most of the time at horse shows we don’t have much time for anything other than what we do, we run from ring to ring, walking courses, riding and training. Every once in awhile a special circumstance arises that gives us “way too much time to think, “and from those moments very often come crazy ideas. One such occasion came last year during the USEF Talent Search Final in Gladstone, NJ, it was in between phases and my students and I got to thinking, we basically are just animal trainers, training our four legged friends to jump over sticks, walls and water

The Long Road to Recovery

Palermo and I are currently on that long and winding road back. Even though this is the second time we’ve gone through this similar scenario, I haven’t yet learned how to cope with the helplessness we feel when our horses are hurt. The first time was February 14, 2011, right at the start of the Florida show season. I was tacking Palermo up like any other day, when I noticed some swelling on his right front.

New Beginnings

This is one of the first times in my life when I feel as if I am “being moved” to move. I never expected to be returning to Germany. I never expected so much that is happening in my life. I never expected to be this moved…. I have always tried to be prepared — you know, like bringing a notebook and a really good pen; or, bringing a water bottle on a long hike. I have my routines like flossing my teeth and cleaning the sinks. I keep up with the turning of the tides and always have a suitcase ready
