"I recently returned from a college semester abroad and my horse and I aren’t clicking the way we used to. I think he’s trying to tell me that he’s mad at me for being gone for such a long time. During a pleasure ride, he even tried to throw me, which is something he’s never done in the eight years I’ve had him. When he’s in his stall, he holds his head low with flaccid ears. He also stands in the corner with his back to the door. How can I mend our broken relationship, along with his feelings of hurt and abandonment?"

Portraits by Shawna Simmons - Carrie Sarabella’s interest in horses started when her grandfather would tell her — without ever taking her — that he was going to “feed the horses.” Thus the obsession began, and eventually her mother insisted he take Carrie with him. That was when they learned that “feed the horses” was his code for going to bet on racehorses at the track.

When I’m trying a horse, I think about a lot of different things: What type of rider is this horse for? What are the expectations for the horse? Does the horse have the necessary experience level for the new owner? Is the horse appropriately priced?

By Carter Anderson - Erica Rosinski is from Charlotte, North Carolina, and is currently a senior on the Fresno State equestrian team in Fresno, California. She began her collegiate riding career in Las Cruces, New Mexico, at New Mexico State University. After Erica moved over 1,700 miles to pursue her dream of riding in college and fell in love with Mexican food, the equestrian program was removed from NMSU athletics. She decided to continue her collegiate equestrian career at Fresno State.

By Jan Westmark - Debbie McDonald and Brentina, a chestnut Hanoverian mare, spent years setting the dressage world on fire. Together, the small rider and big horse brought home Pan Am team and individual gold medals, an Olympic team bronze medal and World Equestrian team silver and bronze medals, and Debbie became the first American to win an FEI World Cup Dressage Final.
