SIDELINES SEPTEMBER 2013 67
1992
We showcased polo
and show jumping,
including Peter Brant’s
White Birch team
who dominated high
goal during the early
years at PBPCC
and Canadian Ian
Millar, who won the
American Invitational
on his famous mount
Big Ben.
1993
Olympic show jumper
Michael Matz shows
us a graceful way to
handle a fall. Michael
is now a well-known
racehorse trainer and
in 2013
Sidelines
did
a story on the next
Matz generation, his
daughter Lucy. In our
polo shot, players
show fancy stickwork
in the El Trebol Cup.
1994
Polo and the Winter
Equestrian Festival
(WEF) graced
this cover. Both
disciplines have
grown in Wellington
and
Sidelines
is
pleased to have been
part of the action
since the beginning
1995
Show jumper Nona
Garson won her first
grand prix, appeared
on our cover and
was chosen to
represent the USET
in Argentina. Nona
went on to represent
the United States
in the Sydney 2000
Olympic Games and
is still a great friend
of
Sidelines
.
1996
Sidelines
continued to
expand its coverage of
the equestrian world by
adding eventing. This
cover featured Phillip
Dutton making a splash
at the Fair Hill Fall
International CCI***.
1997
Carol Lavell’s dressage
horse Gifted, who
passed away at the age
of 17, was remembered
on this cover. Gifted
won team bronze at
the 1992 Olympic
Games, and he
also won America’s
heart. (While we
remembered Gifted,
these were the
days of cutting and
pasting...and the
printer forgot the
letter “f” in his name.)
