68 SIDELINES SEPTEMBER 2013
FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE
1998
Sidelines
celebrated
a decade of covering
the equestrian world.
The Polo Posts
(pictured) was the
predecessor of
Sidelines
Magazine.
You can read more
about how
Sidelines
began in the “My
Story”
feature in
this issue, written
by founder and
publisher Samantha
Charles.
1999
Ronnie
Mutch’s life is
remembered on
the
Sidelines
cover. In 2013,
Sidelines
columnist Holly
Hugo-Vidal
wrote a story on
Ronnie’s son,
Bert Mutch, who
continues his
father’s legacy in
the horse world.
2000
Sidelines
leaves
the newspaper
format behind
and
becomes
a magazine,
published twice
a month at the
time. Now we
are monthly.
This polo shot
appeared on
our first cover
as a magazine
– a fitting tribute
since
Sidelines
started as a polo
newspaper.
2001
Sidelines
kicks
off its first
triathlon and
features polo
player Sugar
Erskine on the
cover riding
dressage. What
a sight with
his long hair
blowing in the
breeze.
2002
Dressage rider
George Williams
and his mount
Rocher, a fan
favorite in the
dressage world,
strutted their stuff
on the
Sidelines
cover. George
is the current
president of the
United States
Dressage
Federation.
2003
Sidelines
has
covered it all
in polo, from
club polo to the
highest rated
tournament in
the world, the
Argentine Open.
