3rd place Hailey and Alexandra Sinclair Alex Sinclair is from Woodside, California, and 12 year old Hailey gave her the confidence to keep riding. “After Hailey came into my life, I became a confident and disciplined rider. She was not an expensive pony, but, she is safe and loving. Hailey and I started out together a year ago and she and I were lucky enough to attend HITS Thermal this year with my barn. . Hailey is not a pricey pony, but, sometimes money can't buy perfection. At Thermal, Hailey never won a thing under saddle because they knew she wasn't from the big leagues: but, when it came to Short Stirrup Equitation, she and I were like two peas in a pod; like peanut butter and jelly. We came home Mid-Circuit Champion. Hailey is my best friend.”

Sidelines’ Search for the Perfect Pony

Who knew that there were so many perfect ponies out there? In honor of our pony issue, Sidelines and Perfect Products, LLC, partnered in the Search for the Perfect Pony. Readers responded en masse through our facebook page, and with 85 entries, we now have no doubt that perfect ponies are everywhere.

Presenting the “most perfect” ponies in Sidelines Magazine’s 2011 Search for the Perfect Pony!

WINNER! Sienna and Tatreanna Schofield

14.1 hand, 17 year old Morab cross “Sienna” is Sidelines Magazine’s official “Perfect Pony”. Owner Tatreanna Schofield nominated Sienna because “She is very sweet and will follow everyone around and come to her name. She is just so gentle, I can do anything on her like slide off her butt or even jump off. I can sit on her backwards and she will walk. Sienna and I have a great bond. I have ridden her without a bridle, and when she’s out in paster I can just go lie on her back for hours. She’s the type of pony that just captures your heart and you can’t let go. She’s my best friend and I couldn’t even think about selling her or seeing her in a new home. She is the ‘perfect pony’.”

2nd place: Simba and Audrey Norrell

Audrey Norrell has a special bond with her pony Simba, a 13-year-old Arabian/QH cross: “The exact moment I tangled his mane between my fingers I knew I was in love. Simba is the same age as I am so we grew up together. As educated as he was, he only packed me around the arena to a certain point and now that I look back, thank goodness he did! By only letting me get away with very little things he made me work to become the rider I wanted to be. He taught me more than I will probably ever know about riding, more than I can appreciate at least.

3rd place: Hailey and Alexandra Sinclair

Alex Sinclair is from Woodside, California, and 12 year old Hailey gave her the confidence to keep riding.

4th place: Peaches and Kylie Locklear

4th place Peaches and Kylie Locklear “I have owned Peaches for 2 1/2 years, and take care of her myself. One of my favorite things about Peaches is that she knows when something's wrong. Peaches has helped me though some hard losses, she is always ready to play and loves to learn new things. She is the type of pony that you could look back on and think about how much she has improved you. I have learned natural horsemanship, but not from anyone but Peaches. She has made me a better rider and person. She is what keeps me motivated, and I love her. She is also gorgeous, but I would love her even if she weren't. She is the best pony that has ever been in my life and will always be.”

5th place Jelly Bean and Mia Cambiaso

Trainer Erin Swaney, from Wellington, FL tells why Jelly is the perfect pony for 8 year-old Mia “We have the perfect pony because jelly was just started under saddle little over 1 year ago. She just started riding the pony and after 2 weeks they went to their 1st dressage show. Mia took the pony all by herself and entered (and remembered) her dressage test by heart with out anyone reading it to her. The pony really could have been a handful but she is a saint and rode the test as if she had been doing it for years! What a PERFECT PONY!!” Featured in the picture is Aldofo Cambiaso his wife Maria Cambiaso, and also Crab Orchard patron Gorge and Beverly Rawlings with the gang to support Mia and Jelly.”

6th place tie: Brandi and Julia McCarthy

“Brandi is my perfect pony, shes a 12 year old morgan mix. She current lives at our house. She's my best friend, she was a rescue and was abused. She gives 1000% every time and trys her heart out to be perfect. I took her to new places all last year and she was amazing, she really knows how to take care of her rider. She brought all my confidence back after it was all shattered from a previous horse. She is the best birthday gift any kid could ever ask for. This pony is truly perfect and i thank her everyday.”

6th place tie: Simba, Kinsey, and Kylie Godwin Peppler

Simba, a 13 year old Welsh cross gelding, brought his two riders up from walk/trot to the pony hunters. But when disaster struck, Simba’s family was there for him, explains Jennifer Godwin Peppler: “Unfortunately, Simba was stricken with a very rare cancer, Hemangiosarcoma, in January of this year. He has endured over 3 months of hospitalization, extensive (12) radiation treatments, a staph infection, and over-processing from the radiation. It has destroyed his cervical spine and now he has limited movement in his hind end. Our goal to go to Pony Finals quickly came to a halt, and we had to pray for a new goal...to be able to survive. Finally, after several tearful and apprehensive months, it appears we will be able to provide this wonderful pony with an early retirement. Sometimes goals change, but in the big picture, the successes and good times are measured over the course of time, not just one show. Sound or not, he is TRULY our pony of a lifetime, and our lives have been enriched so much by having him be such a special part of our family.”

Sports Psychology column🐎 By Margie Sugarman I Sports Psychology column🐎

I just bought a new horse. I think he’s amazing, but I miss the feeling of just “clicking” with my old horse. I know that it takes time to grow that connection, but do you have any tips that can help me be confident and in tune with my new horse in the short term?

You kick off your sneakers and realize that there’s a big hole in the sole of one shoe. Well, you’ve had them for quite a while and have worn them everywhere, from hiking to riding. They’ve served you well but it’s time for new ones. (It’s time to move on to a new horse.) You turn on your computer and order a new pair. You wait in anticipation. You’re excited, they’re cool looking. (He’s pretty!)

Upon arrival, you quickly open the box and slip your feet in. They’re great sneakers, but they aren’t as comfortable as the pair they’re replacing. They don’t bend as well—the sole is stiff. They don’t feel as comfortable—they have to be broken in. They don’t fit like the others did—the old ones were so well molded to your feet. (He’s a new ride, a different ride. He needs some suppling work.)

Of utmost importance in the human/horse relationship (especially the ones with the strongest bonds) is the horse looking to their owner as the leader and respecting their personal space. This important dynamic comes from groundwork—no matter what discipline you’re involved in. Just as it is with friendships, there needs to be respect. Respect is developed when one is on the ground and not mounted.

The things you do might seem small, but if done consistently and in a positive way, the results are huge. The confidence and trust you develop between the two of you will carry your relationship to wherever you want it to go.

❗️George Williams column❗️ The FEI World ❗️George Williams column❗️
The FEI World Cup Final in Omaha is coming up quickly. That means that it’s starting to heat
up as the end of the qualifying period for both the Western European League (WEL) and the
North American League (NAL) nears. I started to write this column before the Amsterdam CDI- W, and I was using the FEI Ranking List from January 15 as a reference. As I sit down to finish
my column, I’m now looking at the results from Amsterdam. While the list of the top contenders
for the WEL hasn’t changed, they’re definitely moving around on the ranking list. The WEL has
three more legs, as they’re referred to: Neumünster February 16–19, Goteborg February 23–26,
and ’s-Hertogenbosch March 9–12, and they could change things dramatically.
Looking at the top 12 athletes from the WEL as they were ranked on January 15, there are five
from Germany, three from the Netherlands and one each from Great Britain, Denmark

Lisa Goldman-Smolen and Ivaro N strike gold in Gre Lisa Goldman-Smolen and Ivaro N strike gold in Great American $300,000 Grand Prix at HITS Ocala!! 🏆🥇

Crowds filled the stands at the HITS Ocala Grand Prix Ring on Sunday afternoon to watch the world’s top athletes compete in the Great American $300,000 Grand Prix. The day concluded with a thrilling five-horse jump-off featuring athletes
representing four countries. In the end, it was Lisa Goldman-Smolen (USA) and Ivaro N who produced the only double clear effort of the day, claiming one of the biggest wins of her career. Scott Keach (AUS) and Noble De La Chapelle earned the second-place prize with the fastest 4-fault jump-off, while Aaron Vale (USA) and Obi Wan placed third as the day’s pathfinders.

“I'm still on cloud nine, I still can't believe it – I’ve used up all my luck for the year,” smiled Goldman-Smolen after her win. “I've been knocking on the door a long time in these bigger classes. I am so proud of my horse – he gave every ounce of effort.”

Sunday’s Great American $300,000 Grand Prix marked the conclusion of the 2023 HITS Ocala circuit. HITS CCO Joe Norick concluded, “We are so excited about the new HITS, with 2023 as the launch. New footing, many new arenas here, and a lot of our facilities across America are getting a lot of love and new footing. Our partnerships with Worldly Martin and others across America including our footing leader Bart Poles overseeing our operations – it really makes a big difference for us. Today is about Ocala and these three riders sitting next to me who supported us this entire winter. We want to be a proud destination for our exhibitors and our friends. We know we have to provide them a beautiful showplace to work from that's horseman friendly, and that's our go goal.

Congratulations to all of the riders, horses, owners, and groom who participated in this prestigious class!!! 🎉
