April 28-May 1, 2011 If ever there was a place that shouts “Long Live the Long Format,” Southern Eighths is that place and on April 28-May 1 Classic Eventing will host its inaugural Heart of the Carolinas (HOTC) Three-Day Event on this 300-acre facility. This Long Format Three-Day Event is the amateur rider’s “Rolex.” It’s the event where Beginner Novice, Novice and Training level riders can negotiate their ultimate Long Format test in a USEA recognized T3D, N3D and BN3D event. And what makes this event even more unique is that it is the only Three-Day Event that offers a Beginner-Novice division.

It’s All Happening

And just like that the 2011 eventing season has begun! This past weekend was Tweseldown, the first affiliated event on the British Eventing calendar. I had my little advanced horse in the Open Intermediate and the Honorable Mary Guinness’s five year old in the Prenovice (equivalent to training level in the US). As I warmed up for the OI dressage test I had a look around and quickly remembered why I am in England.

Lucy Davis’ Winning Ways
Monday, March 14 2011
by Editor
Originally published in Sidelines Magazine, August 2010 Winning her very first Grand Prix at the Memorial Day Classic in front of a packed crowd at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center on May 31 was not the highlight of 17-year-old Lucy Davis’ riding career. The blond-haired girl with a pixie face and a soft little voice had a few other notches in her belt before she topped industry veterans Susie Hutchinson and Mike Endicott in a four-horse jumpoff during the $25,000 Memorial Day Grand Prix. A member of the 2009 North American Young Rider Zone 10 team, Lucy’s silver medal performance at last summer’s NAYRC Finals in Kentucky earned her an invitation to compete at the European Young Masters in Germany in December

It’s That Time of Year Again- Cross Country Schooling
Tuesday, March 01 2011
by
At the beginning of last week I looked at my schedule and I wasn’t sure how it was going to work. I’ve started riding for Mark Todd a few days a week, I have my three horses, and I am also riding a few for Sam Albert who rode for Jamaica at the Olympics in Hong Kong. Needless to say, things have been a bit hectic! Also, somehow it is already the end of February and our season starts in a week! This means driving the horses a few days a week to the gallops to get them fit and taking them all cross country schooling. In England, because the majority of riders over here give their horses November and December off, most of the horses haven’t seen a ditch since September or October. This means cross-country schooling can be fairly entertaining. The problem is that most people wait too long to take their horses schooling because the weather is horrific and the ground is like a swamp. You keep telling yourself: “Oh I will just wait until next week and hopefully it will not be so wet.” Well, surprise surprise, the rain hasn’t stopped and the ground has been getting progressively worse. It is England after all! I am included in this optimistic group of people who think the ground may get better. Unfortunately, after waiting and waiting, I had to brave the bad ground and the pouring rain and chuck the horses into my trusty Roberta and get them out for some cross country. Funny enough, its seems everyone else had the same idea and when I took my horses out on Thursday there were around twenty lorries parked alongside the cross country field. This congestion can be explained by the fact that most cross-country places close when it’s this wet. The only place that stays open, rain or shine, is Boomerang

New Yard
Sunday, February 13 2011

I am excited to report that my horses will be moving to Charlotte Martin’s lovely yard near Hungerford, UK. I have really enjoyed the people and the atmosphere at Yew Tree Farm, where my horses have been previously, but my advanced horse is in need of a gallop track onsite to maintain his fitness

The Team
Tuesday, January 25 2011

It’s noon on Sunday, the horses are off, and I have just finished making American pancakes for my poor deprived British friends. (Clearly I forgot to post this on Sunday as it is now Tuesday!) A life without pancakes . . . I can’t imagine it! Therefore I have recently started a tradition of inviting all of my friends to a pancake breakfast on Sunday mornings- well, until the season starts! Before the season does start rolling, I want to introduce you to my team: Watch It or "Harvey" Meet Watch It, aka “Harvey”. He is a 15-year-old, 16 hand Irish Thoroughbred that I purchased last spring from Simon Lawrance and Sam Brodie

Coming Soon

Watch this space for the debut post of Sidelines’ newest blogger – international event rider Logan Rawlings! Logan grew up riding hunter/jumpers in the San Francisco Bay Area, but soon moved on the the sport of three day eventing and has never looked back. After riding with Phillip Dutton and Mara Dean in the U.S., Logan moved to the United Kingdom and spent two years working for renowned British eventer William Fox-Pitt. In November 2009 she took the next big step of opening her own yard and setting out her training shingle. Why did this American-born rider choose to settle in England? How deep is her string of horses, and which international competitions is she aiming for this season? Check back here soon for the answers to those questions and much, much more!
