MANHATTAN, Kan. (SMU) – The SMU equestrian team is off to the best start in school history, 3-0, after defeating Tennessee-Martin, 6-4, Saturday morning at Timbercreek Stables.
“We are very pleased with our team after our first road trip of the season,” head coach Haley Schoolfield said. “We had several outstanding rides today, but we still have some places where we can tighten up a bit. We will work hard in preparation for a big meet at TCU on Friday.”
SMU opened the meet with a dominant 4-1 win over fences. Freshman Schaefer Raposa earned her first MVP honor with an 89-82 win over Hunter Ralston. All-American Emma Roberts collected a point for the Mustangs as she defeated Katie Miranda 88-86. Freshman Alex Butterworth added to SMU’s score with an 87-84 decision over Reid Rickett. Sophomore Courtney Line picked up the final point for the Mustangs as she downed Kara Bergenty 87-85.
UTM edged SMU, 3-2, on the flat. Freshman Paulena Johnson tallied a point with an 86-84 performance against Rickett. Junior Julianna Fischer rounded out the scoring with an impressive 84-77 win over Mykaela VanSelus.
SMU plays at crosstown rival TCU at 2 p.m. on Friday.
