Dreaming of Horses, Training and Following in Her Parents’ Footsteps

Katie Lenkart

Delano, Minnesota

Working student at Ashland Farms

How long have you been part of the horse world?

Both of my parents are trainers, so I’ve been part of the horse world for as long as I can remember. I was quite literally “raised in a barn.”

What part do you play in the horse world?

I’m a working student at Ken and Emily Smith’s Ashland Farms and compete in the junior equitation.

What’s your favorite thing about what you do?

My favorite thing about our sport is definitely the horses. They’re the reason we’re in this sport, and although they have no reason to perform for us, they do. They go out every day and remind us why we love what we do. If you’re lucky enough, you might meet one along the way that will change your life.

What’s your biggest achievement?

Qualifying for the second round in the North American Junior Equitation Championships at the 2020 Capital Challenge Horse Show. It was one of those moments where everything finally came together and paid off.

What are your goals for the future?

Since I was very young, I’ve always wanted to own my own barn and be a trainer. I grew up watching my parents manage their own barns and realized very early on that I wanted to be like them. Hopefully that dream comes true one day!

What’s the best thing about your life?

It may sound corny, but I couldn’t name just one thing. There have been countless horses and people along the way that have made me who I am today, but I’m especially grateful to my current horse, Trek, the entire team at Ashland Farms and my parents. Trek has taught me so much over the past year and taught me to love the sport for the horses. He is my horse of a lifetime. The team at Ashland Farms came into my life in 2017 and I can say without a doubt that they have changed not only my riding but my life. I’ve met so many amazing people and friends at Ashland, and I wouldn’t be the person I am today without them. Last but definitely not least, I’m so grateful to my parents for not only allowing me to pursue my dreams in this sport, but also for showing me what it means to be horse people. They have always taught me the horse comes first, no matter what. I’m a very lucky girl to have so many people who have helped me, and will always be grateful to anyone that lent a hand along the way.

Best-kept secret about what you do?

I actually do all the hunter braiding on my own horse! When I have time, I also braid a few extra horses. It’s definitely a great skill to have in this sport!
