Nine Things

Thursday, October 20 2011 by Website Editor
Festival in the Country The week before Fair Hill International CCI3* and 2* (October 13-16) was soggy, so much that fields were flooded and I rode strictly on the roads, foregoing hunting on Thursday because the footing was so slippery.  Friday was overcast with intermittent showers as I donned my wellies and fleece and headed down to Fair Hill, Maryland to go walk the course.  Between leaving the vendor tents and the far side of the course, clouds blew in with yet another rain shower; fortunately fleece is still warm and comfy even when wet. View of clouds and raindrops in the water at fence 22 for the 2* But glory be!  Saturday began cold and as the morning progressed past 6 A.M., the sun rose and it turned into a perfect day spend in the country with blue sky, bright sunshine and magnificent foliage in yellows and crimson.  It doesn’t get much better than that. Creature comforts The organizers of the event thoughtfully placed many, many trash barrels everywhere. You didn’t need to carry that empty drink bottle more than a few steps.

Not Ridiculous At All.

Tuesday, October 11 2011 by Editor
Just when walking the dog past multi-million dollar mansions inside a gated country club has started to feel quasi-normal, one is reminded once again how very surreal the winter equestrian capital of the world really is. And it’s not because of the pet zebra that my horse stares at every morning while hacking around Wellington.

Jumpin’ Jenny Flash

Tuesday, September 20 2011 by Website Editor
Sunday afternoon, during a break between the two star and three star show jump phase to decide the winners of the Plantation Field Three Star Event (Unionville, Pennsylvania), visitors were witness to a spectacular jump-off, of sorts, between some of this weekend’s event riders.   Three years ago the organizers of the Plantation Field Three Day Event sponsored a casual puissance jumping event during the lunch break.  Puissance features a wall that increases in height with elimination of riders as they fail to clear it until there is only one rider and horse combination remaining – a horse version of musical chairs.  It’s popularity with the crowd got the organizers last year to entice several event riders to participate and it resulted in a strip-tease of sorts as Doug Payne gamely traded articles of clothing for the right to stay in the game.  This year the Professional Riders Organization sponsored the event for the benefit of Operation Homefront, an organization which provides emergency funds for military families and wounded veterans.  As the contest progressed and a wall came down, off came the boot of one rider in compensation… **** **** but as the brick wall grew higher and higher, Jenny Brannigan topped them all and retained all her accoutrement

Big Money = Big Sport: An Exciting Day at the Pfizer Million

Monday, September 12 2011 by Editor
The scene by the ingate was tense. The crowd lining the hill grew with riders and their connections as the class went on and rider after rider came away with one rail, two rails, six rails. When Duncan McFarlane, 21st to go, finally notched the first clear round, the crowd was overjoyed. As Duncan is based in Northern California, On the Line was especially overjoyed to see a hometown rider shine on the other side of the country in this incredibly difficult class

Jennifer Williams, our February cover rider, is gr Jennifer Williams, our February cover rider, is grateful for MIllione, her longtime partner with whom she won the 2020 Grand Prix National Championship.

"Millione has been such an impactful horse for my life. He's all heart, and I joke that he's my little Viking warrior because he's solid and strong and always ready to give 110%. He loves to work and has such an incredible work ethic. He's so happy and quirky, it warms my heart," Jennifer said.

From the looks of it, Jennifer (@summervalepremierdressage) warms Millione's heart too as evidenced in this photo gem by Sidelines photographer @msfullerphotography of the two sharing a sweet moment.

"I remember everything about that day. I remember "I remember everything about that day. I remember the name of the horse his color, and that it was a beautiful summer day in the mountains. I was thinking, This is it. This is the moment I've been waiting for. It was all I wanted to do for the rest of my life."

A trail ride in Colorado on a roan gelding named Schnapps was U.S. eventer Liz Halliday-Sharp's first foray into the world of horses. After her momentous first ride, Liz began taking lessons, earning money and saving her allowance to buy tack and riding clothes.

When the native Californian joined Pony Club and had a chance to jump cross country, she decided eventing was meant for her. "I got that 'this is it' feeling again," Liz said.

Liz's father, a vintage auto racer who instructed for the Sports Car Club of America, taught Liz how to race cars when she got her driver's license. The dad and daughter shared a 1967 Datsun 510 which was the first car Liz raced on her journey to becoming the most successful female driver in the American Le Mans Series.
