Douglas Bunn memorial sculpture to be unveiled at Hickstead

Tuesday, June 19 2012 by Editor
Images of memorial © Daisy Bunn www.honeybunnphotography.com Douglas Bunn (1928-2009) was the founder of the All England Jumping Course, and one of the biggest innovators in the sport of showjumping. Now a memorial sculpture featuring Douglas on his most famous horse is going to be unveiled during the Hickstead Derby meeting. The sculpture – in the form of a ‘relief’ – has been created by famous artist Philip Blacker, who is a friend of the Bunn family. It is the first time Philip has worked with this type of art form, which is somewhat apt for a tribute to Douglas Bunn, one of equestrianism’s great pioneers. “The art of relief sculpture has rather fallen out of use in recent years and so I was keen to do something that was unusual,” says Philip. “Making a relief on this scale was not without its challenges, partly because of the foreshortening effect of the horse and rider coming towards one at such an acute angle. I am pleased with the result now it has been cast in stone.” Philip has created some of the most iconic sculptures in equestrianism, including life-size statues of Red Rum, Desert Orchid, Best Mate and Persian Punch

Alex Roos: a Teammate Profile

Monday, June 18 2012 by Editor
I’m sitting at my favorite Starbucks in uptown with Alex talking about the team. Both of us are trying to remember when we first met and neither of us is coming up with anything. We know it was at some team function, but the specifics escape us. Somehow that inconspicuous introduction transitioned into a valuable friendship complete with a lot of 4AM rides to the airport, me crashing on Alex’s couch, and pre-competition trips to Starbucks

My First Appointment with LoVe xx

Monday, June 18 2012 by Editor
As I reflect on many valuable lessons, I am reminded that horses are just one of my many teachers in my life. While I am fortunate to have many spiritual human teachers and mentors, lately I have been thinking about how horses teach me about love. Do they really teach me how to love myself; to love others; to love life? When I was a little girl all I wanted to do was ride my horses and be with them.  My first memory is still so clear — I was dressed in snug jean overalls with my hair in a loose braid when my father took my 3 year-old hand and walked with me to the neighbor’s pasture.  It was a sunny Sunday, and I was so excited to finally see this “thing” called a horse! Dad firmly held my hand as I gently poked a huge carrot through the fence for the orange (chestnut) horse with eyes like big black marbles. In that moment, my best description is to say I was absolutely “love-struck” — I felt a distinct sense of inner peace, my heart-opened and without consciously knowing it, in those moments  I invited horses to be one of my teachers about life. To this day I am grateful for such a clear, vivid memory. Many of my childhood memories have faded with time, but this memory remains etched in my heart.

Listen To Dear Old Dad! A Father’s Day Tribute

Saturday, June 16 2012 by Editor
By Sydney Masters/Compiled by April Leonard What should you get your dad as a Father’s Day gift?  What’s the best advice a father can give?  This Father’s Day, Sidelines got the scoop straight from the “horse’s” mouth by asking young professional riders to tell us about their fathers. Reed Kessler as a baby in the saddle, watched by her father Murray Kessler and her mother Reed Kessler treats her father, Murray Kessler, to breakfast in bed on Father’s Day.  “My dad has given me lots of good advice,”  Reed says. “He will always text me if I’m down, saying that I’m the best rider in the world and I’m perfect.  Even though it’s clearly not true, it’s the definition of unconditional love! If I could make one thing happen for my dad, it would be to make the U.S. Show Jumping team to compete in London (at this summer’s Olympics). He would be so proud.” Daniela Stransky and her father Tomas Stransky celebrate Daniela's clear rounds at the Gucci Masters in Paris, France Daniela Stransky of Stransky’s Mission Farm says “My favorite present I ever got my dad for Father’s Day was five cookbooks from the best chefs in Spain
