JEM links, Saratoga Special (available on-line), and a few thoughts about life in general…

Wednesday, September 03 2014 by Editor
Okay, we lost sleep, following the Jeux Equestres Mondiaux, the acronym WEG in English-speaking countries, but we’re going to be quirky (what else is new?) and refer to them as JEM – because the world championships are gems. In retrospect, now that the first week is complete and the US reining team earned all of the medals, one might question why our other teams didn’t do as well and medal somehow, some way, in eventing, dressage, paradressage and endurance… Well, listen up, because we’re only going to say this one time: to qualify and compete in the world championships is not easy – just getting there is a victory of sorts.

Juniors and Families, Junior Weekend, 2014

Monday, May 26 2014 by Editor
Show Jumping Hall of Fame – Juniors   Addison Gierkink came a good distance to Devon from Harpswell, Maine but her effort was well rewarded when she took home $5600 and the Blue Ribbon in Class 203, the $20,000 Show Jumping Hall of Fame – Juniors.  Riding Candy Tribble and Windsor Show Stables Promised Lane, she was one of only four competitors in the first round of 23 to go double clear and advance to the second round.                   With a fast, thrifty and balanced second round she bested the next placed horse/rider combination of Luxina and Michael Hughes by over   two seconds in the jump off

corrected with new pix: Bay My Hero & William Fox-Pitt (GBR) Win Rolex, Lauren Kieffer & Veronica earn USEF National 4-Star Championship, Buck…

Sunday, April 27 2014 by Editor
Pre-PS: Sorry for the mistake in original post – our bad – when we identified Sinead and Tate as Lauren and Veronica – big oopsie! – we know the difference, but were dazzled by smiles and feeling a wee bit fatiqued after an exhilarating Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, presented by Land Rover. Also, stay tuned for a post about the inaugural Dubarry of Ireland Nations Team Challenge, won by the USA – Lsuren Kieffer/Veronica, Sinead Halpin/Manboir de Carneville and Buck Davidson/Ballynoe Castle RM. We think that’s the main reason why we inserted Sinead’s photo by mistake – we noticed the blue rosette and kicked on with our brain asleep at the mouse… NEW IMPROVED POST RE ROLEX KENTUCKY 3-Day Event, presented by Land Rover: William Fox-Pitt won his third Rolex championship and watch in five years – on the less experienced of his two horses, Bay My Hero, with Seacookie TSF earning ninth place

Plain Brown Wrapper

Saturday, February 08 2014 by Editor
Boyd Martin’s newest mount made a debut, of sorts, yesterday in the Open Intermediate Division at Pine Top Farm in Thomson, Georgia.  After watching the video that had been posted at Boyd Martin’s website  in December I was most interested to see Shamwari 4 in person.  He may come in a Plain Brown Wrapper but that label is anything but descriptive of what you will see.  The horse has that “It Factor”, charisma.  You WILL remember this horse when he goes by.  Already spectators are calling him by the most obvious nickname, you guessed it:  ShamWOW!

Wednesday, October 02 2013 by Editor
Surface performed outstandingly despite deluge at Sonoma Horse Park   Lexington, KY (September 30th) – When the show must go on, Sonoma Horse park officials put their trust in  Martin Collins Equ ine Surfaces . Despite six hours of consecutive, heavy rain (record rainfall for a single day in September in Sonoma County) at the Sonoma Horse Park’s final Saturday show of the 2013 season, Martin Collins’ CLOPF® footing held up flawlessly throughout the downpour, and the horse show stayed on schedule.

It’s been a while since I’ve shown. After Indo It’s been a while since I’ve shown. After Indoors we turned the horses out and let them be horses. But now it’s time and I’m getting ready to head to Florida for the winter circuit. I’m feeling a bit anxious about getting back into the competitive state of mind, doubting myself and feeling more stress than I did when I was showing. Is this normal? What’s happening to me? What do I do to get back into the right place in my head? Why do I keep going back to this if it does what it does to me at the start of each season? - a Sidelines fan

"Throughout human history, people have enjoyed organizing competitions—the Ancient Greek Olympic Games go back to 776 BC. If you look around, you’ll notice that competition is everywhere in the modern world. Many historians believe that 'competitiveness' is a biological trait that co-evolved with the basic need for human survival. However, returning to a competitive state after time off from being a competitive athlete can be quite daunting," says sports psychologist Margie Sugarman.

"The proper mindset keeps you grounded in the present instead of solely focusing on the results. This automatically helps lower the performance brain state and allows for better focus, performance and results- Focus on what you can control."

Emily Dulin has always been an animal lover, and h Emily Dulin has always been an animal lover, and helping others is in her blood. She’s the daughter of a Venezuelan ambassador and has spent much of her professional career working in social services and animal welfare. In 2015, Emily took on the role of chief executive officer of Brooke USA Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the welfare of working horses, donkeys and mules, and helping the people that depend on them for survival worldwide.

“We are making a difference,” Emily said. “We will evaluate an animal at the start of a new program, and then just one, two and then five years later, we see marked improvements in terms of how they are handled, husbandry practices, what they eat and even how crops are being grown just to feed their animals—how feed is stored—and more. To see that end result firsthand is what I find most satisfying.”
