Let’s Focus on Fixing the Unwanted Horse Issue First
Tuesday, January 22 2013

Considering the potential of retired racehorses, why are so many going to slaughter? The last equine slaughter house in the United States was closed in 2007. Many saw this as a huge victory, but in fact it simply diverted horses to slaughter plants outside the country. What continues to be stated in the headlines as a “slaughter issue” is actually a result of the “unwanted horse” issue. Digging a bit deeper we see that it is compounded by a lack of funding to assist unwanted horses.

Ladies Night at the $50,000 Wellington Equestrian Realty Grand Prix CSI 2*on January 19 By Kim MacMillan, MacMillan Photography & Media Services When the last fence was jumped in the nine rider jump-off on Saturday night three young ladies topped the 56-entry field that included riders from 14 countries. The line-up included, among others, international stars such as Mario Deslauriers, Margie Engle, Kent Farrington, Laura Kraut, Ian Miller, Rodrigo Pessoa and McLain Ward. Reed Kessler, at 18 the youngest Olympian to date at last summer’s London Games, riding her 13-year-old Swedish Warmblood gelding Ligist (Levantos II – Robin Z) made neat work of the jump off, blazing over the fences and tripping the finish timer in 37.81 to take top money. Less than a second behind her was Katie Dinan on Grant Road Partner’s 11-year-old Selle Francais gelding Nougat Du Vallet (by Scherif D’Elle out of Camme Du Vallet). The final pair in the jump-off Brianne Goutal and Remarkable Farm’s 11-year-old Selle Francais Nice de Prissey (by Rosire out of Trophee De Prissey) gave it their all, but they stopped the clock at 38.53 to capture third

Wellington, FL – January 18, 2013 - Today’s Gold Coast Opener Grand Prix CDI-W showcased horses and riders preparing for next weekend’s World Dressage Masters (WDM) CDI5* Palm Beach, and the WDM competitors certainly displayed their dominance. By Jan Westmark-Allan The new beautiful carousel at the entrance to the Winter Equestrian Festival Take one look at the pictures of the Venetian carousel and you might think it’s a photo from Disney World – but no, that would be the new carousel at the entrance to the Winter Equestrian Festival. WEF has always been a wonderful horsey place where dreams come true (just like Disney) and now Mark Bellissimo, who heads up Equestrian Sports Productions and is the man behind WEF, has made everyone’s dreams a little brighter with the carousel
