Wellington, FL – April 9, 2014- The GPL Polotini Party, a celebration held at the Mallet Grille at International Polo Club Palm Beach, officially kicked off The 5th Annual Gay Polo Week. A gathering of members of the GPL, sponsors, friends and family enjoyed an Argentine style asado, music and merrymaking sponsored by Patricia Quick.
GPL founder Chip McKenney led a short presentation to thank sponsors and hosts. At the end of his brief speech, McKenney invited Glenn Atkinson to the podium. He explained how Atkinson, fondly referred to as “The Senator,” had introduced him to polo. He said the Senator and his wife and family had supported the founding of GPL and were always there to encourage him forward. Atkinson, once a 3-goal rated player, played well into his seventies. McKenney named the trophy for the feature game of the International Gay Polo Tournament the Senator’s Cup in his honor.
McKenney presented a genuinely touched Atkinson with an original Louise Mellon polo painting called “Airborne.” “I am so grateful to Louise for the donation of the painting,” said McKenney. “It was such a perfect way for me to honor the Senator. Without Glenn, there would be no GPL. Now in its fifth year, it is growing and growing.” Louise Mellon’s work is immediately recognizable and primarily features horses, dogs and the equestrian lifestyle. Her brightly colored, vibrant pieces often have a witty or unexpected approach and are created with the intent to amuse.
Louise Mellon’s work can be seen on the pages and covers of equestrian and art publications. Her work has been presented at numerous solo and juried shows on the east coast.
