It’s All Happening

Tuesday, March 15 2011 by
And just like that the 2011 eventing season has begun! This past weekend was Tweseldown, the first affiliated event on the British Eventing calendar.  I had my little advanced horse in the Open Intermediate and the Honorable Mary Guinness’s five year old in the Prenovice (equivalent to training level in the US). As I warmed up for the OI dressage test I had a look around and quickly remembered why I am in England.

Lucy Davis’ Winning Ways

Monday, March 14 2011 by Editor
Originally published in Sidelines Magazine, August 2010 Winning her very first Grand Prix at the Memorial Day Classic in front of a packed crowd at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center on May 31 was not the highlight of 17-year-old Lucy Davis’ riding career. The blond-haired girl with a pixie face and a soft little voice had a few other notches in her belt before she topped industry veterans Susie Hutchinson and Mike Endicott in a four-horse jumpoff during the $25,000 Memorial Day Grand Prix. A member of the 2009 North American Young Rider Zone 10 team, Lucy’s silver medal performance at last summer’s NAYRC Finals in Kentucky earned her an invitation to compete at the European Young Masters in Germany in December

Subclinical

Monday, March 14 2011 by
They tell you in vet school, “For everything you miss for not knowing, you miss ten things for not looking”. It is by that axiom that I have strived to practice, and if there is a good side to my reputation, hopefully it is that I am thorough. hint hint... Just before coming south this winter, while still in the frozen tundra, I was asked to look at a 5 year old Fresian gelding. He had been starting to learn a little dressage, but having a hard time on his left lead. Ok, truth be told, it was nearly impossible to get him to canter on the left lead at all; even in the field he would only canter on his right lead. A couple of other vets had examined/ treated him, but he was unchanged.

You Can’t Live Your Life Scared

“You can’t live your life scared”. The words of my first boss and mentor, Dan Flynn, resonate with me even today.

What am I doing here?

Monday, March 07 2011 by
When I graduated vet school, a blog was something you’d mop up off the floor, if you asked most Americans. But having recently gotten on facebook, and after finally getting a phone with a camera (!), I decided to plunge into this multimedia thing full force

Check out this FUGLY HORSE post!

Friday, March 04 2011 by Website Editor
Even if you don’t breed, you gotta read this latest Best of Fugly Horse of the Day post, written by our alter-ego/kindred spirit on the west coast. It’s a great set of “10 Questions” with Fugly replies that zing at your third eye with the speed of a stray dart hurled in a rowdy sports bar! We think along parallel lines with this horseperson in many ways, but she’s got the brass to come right out and say this stuff !!! The truth often hurts. It can also set you free. As Meredith says on Grey’s Anatomy: But here’s the truth about the truth. It hurts

Meet Me At the Waf

Sunday, February 20 2011 by
The Waffle House Restaurant, Whiskey Road, Aiken, SC Anyone driving through the South is familiar with that little box with the yellow roofline placed strategically at every interchange of every major highway.  While some might characterize The Waffle House as Cheeze Whiz to aged Cheddar, I, for one, am smitten with their Pecan Studded Waffles (877,388,027 waffles served since 1955) and have become a regular breakfast customer.  There are three Waffle House restaurants within five miles of my home in Aiken so I can stop on any of my errands to Walmart (two of those in Aiken, too), the tack shop or the feed store for a quick bite to eat.  But, a romantic candle lit Valentines dinner for two at the Waf?  Reservations needed, no less.  Three weeks ago I signed my oh-so-game husband up for a dinner for two and off we went on Valentines Day for a 6:30 dinner date.  While we waited to be seated, we were served Sweet Tea (this is the South, after all) and chatted with the hostess

New Yard

Sunday, February 13 2011 by
I am excited to report that my horses will be moving to Charlotte Martin’s lovely yard near Hungerford, UK.  I have really enjoyed the people and the atmosphere at Yew Tree Farm, where my horses have been previously, but my advanced horse is in need of a gallop track onsite to maintain his fitness

Driving Miss Cindy

Wednesday, February 09 2011 by
An old friend of mine who was Co-DC of a Pony Club with me in Pennsylvania moved to Aiken several years ago.  She came to town knowing not a soul but she did come with a horse and a pony.  The horse was a retired three-day event horse which had belonged to a member of the family; the pony was her daughter’s surgery pony when her daughter was in vet school.  The pony was basically un-broke but my friend took driving lessons, persevered and now Cindy is broke to drive and she goes out on excursions around town. On a quiet Sunday morning in Aiken my friend and another pony driver met at The Green Boundary, a large estate on Whiskey Road which adjoins the horse district, parked their trucks and tacked up their ponies for a drive through downtown.  My horse being a been “there done” that sort of dude rounded out the threesome, although I was mounted
