The IHSA Jon Conyers Memorial Scholarship

Thursday, June 14 2012 by Editor
Peyton Callanan of Georgia Southern University The winner of the 2012 Jon Conyers Memorial Scholarship is Peyton Callanan, a Walk-Trot-Canter (W-T-C) rider from Georgia Southern University. Her coach, Eleanor Ellis, supported her nomination with this moving recommendation: “Sometimes as coaches we instruct riders. Sometimes we get the privilege of teaching and encouraging horsemen and horsewomen. Peyton Callanan is a horsewoman in the making. She does not get to attend every show.

Upperville – Shady News – Sat p.m.

Sunday, June 10 2012 by Editor
Well, actually, it’s Sunday morning – we returned home from the 159th Upperville Colt & Horse Show by around 8:30, answered emails for an hour or so and then had to stretch out with a book:  woke up around 12:30 and downloaded Saturday’s photos from two cards and answered more emails. Saturday started and finished as a gloriously bright day of sunshine. Upperville’s “shade” proved how smart everyone was in terms of preserving those old oak trees on the hunter side when they did the footing (green oases within the main hunter ring). The whole week has been a tribute to how well the show committee treats spectators and exhibitors with lots of tents to augment the trees that dot the open fields that comprise the jumper side. The gazillion details that make Upperville such a fabulous show depend in great part on the incredible generosity of the landowners of the farms on each side of Route 50/John Mosby Highway, which provide the uniquely beautiful settings for Upperville . Okay, we didn’t want to admit it, but we are tuckered out, trying to keep up with the action in all the rings, even with that United Metro golf cart !!! Too much going on all the time. We hardly got to the second hunter ring all week.

Upperville – Shady News – Wed P.M.

Friday, June 08 2012 by Editor
This is a verbal nightcap – no adult bevvies and too late for coffee! Lovely day, but long, and we’re weary. We’ll do a quickie recap of some of the action, but honestly, peeps, you would have such a great time if you head out to Upperville, an easy drive westward on Route 50 if you start somewhere in northern VA on the Route 66 side… if you decide to travel to Upperville on Rt. 66, you will have to wend your way over scenic winding back roads from lovely little towns like The Plains, Marshall, Delaplane etc… Got a GPS – easy peasy – or google for map & directions. We’re still rattling all over both sides of the road, enjoying Upperville in the United Metro golf car t… Our CEO (canine executive officer) has been outstanding all week for her 2nd Upperville - she's such a great doggle and a rescue from Middleburg Humane. © Lauren R Giannini QUICK HEAD’S UP!!! Friday around 5 p.m. the $25,000 Welcome Stakes take place in the T.

JustWorld International Launches ‘Adopt a Project’ Campaign

Wednesday, June 06 2012 by Editor
Wellington, Florida— JustWorld International is launching a new campaign on June 4 aimed at making it even easier for supporters to get involved, and to choose exactly which programs they would like their donations to fund.  JustWorld International is a not-for-profit humanitarian organization which funds life-changing programs for impoverished children in Cambodia, Honduras, Guatemala, and Brazil. The ‘Adopt a Project’ campaign identifies opportunities to support a number of highly successful nutrition, health and hygiene, education, and leadership and cultural development programs and allows donors to choose which of JustWorld’s numerous initiatives they would like to support. Their new campaign is a great opportunity for individuals, groups and businesses to get involved by taking on an entire project, helping to provide critical operational support to JustWorld projects. Angela Covert-Lawrence at the JustWorld Project Site in Guatemala JustWorld Rider Ambassador Angela Covert-Lawrence did just that three years ago, committing to pay for the annual salary of a doctor at a medical clinic at the Los Patojos site in Jocotenango, Guatemala. “During my second visit to Guatemala, I had the opportunity to meet the doctor in person,” said Covert-Lawrence, a grand prix show jumping rider representing Canada.  “He explained to me what he wanted to do, and how he was going to be able to provide the much needed medical care for the children.  I asked how much, and agreed to adopt the project right there on the spot, while standing in the middle of the clinic.” It was a decision that would prove to be life-changing, both for Covert-Lawrence and the community at Los Patojos as a whole

Pony Club Championships Welcome Adult Members to Compete

Tuesday, June 05 2012 by Editor
June 1, 2012 (Lexington, KY) – Pony Club’s Adult Horsemasters members are being offered the opportunity to qualify for, and compete at the 2012 Championships Competition.  Both East Championships held in Lexington VA July 25-29, and West Championships held in Cle Elum, WA August 7-10 have extended the offer to Horsemasters members to compete at Championships right along with the youth members.  Current members of the Horsemasters Program must qualify in the discipline of their choice and will then compete in either, Dressage, Eventing, Show Jumping or Tetrathlon.  Like the youth members, adult participants will be judged on their Horse Management skills and they will share tack and feed stalls with fellow Horsemasters members.  Unlike the youth competitors, the Horsemasters members will compete as individuals rather than team members and will ride against the other participating adults.   “Taking an inventory of our resources, one sees at the top of the list a large group of competent individuals who serve the Pony Clubs in many capacities, from District Commissioner and local committee member to national officer or member of a national board. Here lies our greatest asset – people; people dedicated to helping children to enjoy a way of life with horses and ponies, which has meant so much as a part of their own lives.” Sherman P. Haight, Jr., M.F.H. USPC President, 1961-1963   About the Horsemasters Program – Started in 2001, the USPC Horsemasters Program was developed to meet the needs of Pony Club parents and other adults to learn more about horses, to feel comfortable around the animals and secure in their knowledge about horsemanship and riding skills, thereby becoming more empowered volunteers to Pony Club at the local, regional and national levels. Horsemasters Groups may be formed in affiliation with a Pony Club, a Riding Center or a Region, and are open to anyone, who is not a current Participating Member, 18 years of age or older.

GO THE DISTANCE IN KERRITS’ SLENDER RIDER PADDED CAPRI !

Friday, June 01 2012 by Editor
Kerrits Slender Rider Bingen, WA – Maybe it’s your first ride of the season. Maybe it’s a longer distance than you’ve ever ridden before. Whatever the circumstances, Kerrits’ Slender Rider Padded Capri ensures you return to the barn in the same shape as when you left. That’s because the stretchy, breathable capri is built with a soft moisture-wicking padded seat that cushions and absorbs every leap and trot. We worked with our design team in Italy to construct a seat pad specifically for horseback riding, extending over the sit bones to target cushioning right where riders need it most; seamlessly molded with all-way stretch, and segmented to expedite airflow and increase breathability. The soft, stretchy undergarment slims and supports thanks to compression riding technology. Zonal knit construction contours through the hip and thigh, while a wide waistband helps support abdominal and lower back muscles

Lustre of the Gemstone

Friday, June 01 2012 by Editor
Thursday night prior to winning the Grand Prix, McLain Ward formally retired his two-time Olympic gold medal partner, Sapphire.  He rode the 16 year old chestnut mare into the ring through to the awards section where she stood while the announcer read her list of accomplishments, and then Ward dismounted, removed the saddle, replacing it with a white sheet embroidered with her name.  He took her past the grandstand where her fans could get up close to admire her, then walked back out the “in gate”, into the warm up ring, and down to the far end nearest the stabling area.  As he handed her off to a waiting groom, in the distance I could see his hand move to his bowed head and it was clear that he was wiping away a tear.
