Douglas Bunn memorial sculpture to be unveiled at Hickstead
Tuesday, June 19 2012
by Editor
Images of memorial © Daisy Bunn www.honeybunnphotography.com Douglas Bunn (1928-2009) was the founder of the All England Jumping Course, and one of the biggest innovators in the sport of showjumping. Now a memorial sculpture featuring Douglas on his most famous horse is going to be unveiled during the Hickstead Derby meeting. The sculpture – in the form of a ‘relief’ – has been created by famous artist Philip Blacker, who is a friend of the Bunn family. It is the first time Philip has worked with this type of art form, which is somewhat apt for a tribute to Douglas Bunn, one of equestrianism’s great pioneers. “The art of relief sculpture has rather fallen out of use in recent years and so I was keen to do something that was unusual,” says Philip. “Making a relief on this scale was not without its challenges, partly because of the foreshortening effect of the horse and rider coming towards one at such an acute angle. I am pleased with the result now it has been cast in stone.” Philip has created some of the most iconic sculptures in equestrianism, including life-size statues of Red Rum, Desert Orchid, Best Mate and Persian Punch

Upperville – Shady News – Sat p.m.

Well, actually, it’s Sunday morning – we returned home from the 159th Upperville Colt & Horse Show by around 8:30, answered emails for an hour or so and then had to stretch out with a book: woke up around 12:30 and downloaded Saturday’s photos from two cards and answered more emails. Saturday started and finished as a gloriously bright day of sunshine. Upperville’s “shade” proved how smart everyone was in terms of preserving those old oak trees on the hunter side when they did the footing (green oases within the main hunter ring). The whole week has been a tribute to how well the show committee treats spectators and exhibitors with lots of tents to augment the trees that dot the open fields that comprise the jumper side. The gazillion details that make Upperville such a fabulous show depend in great part on the incredible generosity of the landowners of the farms on each side of Route 50/John Mosby Highway, which provide the uniquely beautiful settings for Upperville . Okay, we didn’t want to admit it, but we are tuckered out, trying to keep up with the action in all the rings, even with that United Metro golf cart !!! Too much going on all the time. We hardly got to the second hunter ring all week.

Yipes: *originally Wed PM – sun-fuddled fatique! This is a verbal nightcap – no adult bevvies and too late for coffee! Lovely day, but long, and we’re weary. We’ll do a quickie recap of some of the action, but honestly, peeps, you would have such a great time if you head out to Upperville, an easy drive westward on Route 50 if you start somewhere in northern VA on the Route 66 side… if you decide to travel to Upperville on Rt.

We’re still rattling all over both sides of the road, enjoying Upperville in the United Metro golf car t… Our CEO (canine executive officer) has been outstanding all week for her 2nd Upperville - she's such a great doggle and a rescue from Middleburg Humane. © Lauren R Giannini QUICK HEAD’S UP!!! Friday around 5 p.m. the $25,000 Welcome Stakes take place in the T.

We will be on the road for a total of nine weeks and will travel to Atlanta, Michigan, Kentucky, and the west coast of Florida. We will be taking over 20 horses with us this year and will travel close to 2,000 miles. We will have close to 30 clients, workers, riders, grooms and parents in tow.
