By Jan Westmark Sidelines Magazine has Derby fever right now!! This Saturday is the 2015 Kentucky Derby and today the movie “50 To 1” was released – the inspiring true story of 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird. (and for anyone who is a Kaniac, the movie stars Christian Kane!) Here’s the scoop on the movie: A misfit group of New Mexico cowboys find themselves on the journey of a lifetime when their crooked-footed racehorse qualifies for the Kentucky Derby. Based on the inspiring true story of Mine That Bird, the cowboys face a series of mishaps on their way to Churchill Downs, becoming the ultimate underdogs in a final showdown with the world’s racing elite
Editor’s Note: I love sharing all of the great stories that run in Sidelines Magazine. The story on Tom Poulin – a true pioneer in the development of modern dressage and a founding member of the U.S. Dressage Federation – is an inspirational story
Randi Thompson Photo by Erik Olsen, Erikolsenpictures.com Editor’s Note: I love meeting horse people – and when they live near me, it’s even better. Randi Thompson and I both live in the Western North Carolina Mountains – not far from the new Tryon International Equestrian Center! Sidelines staff writer Lauren R.
By Jan Westmark I love the Budweiser Clydesdales – especially their amazing Superbowl commercials. One thing that’s just a little better then the “you-need-a-Kleenex” Budweiser Clydesdales commercials, however, is seeing them in person! If you want to see the Budweiser Clydesdales in person and you live or are visiting the Western North Carolina mountains on April 29th, then you are in luck! The world-famous hitch will appear in the Landrum Parade on April 29th just a few days before the Blockhouse Steeplechase that takes place in Tryon, North Carolina
By Jan Westmark Tryon, North Carolina, is the “place to be” right now with the opening of the new Tryon International Equestrian Center. It’s a gorgeous facility and the show season is about to kick off. As the Editor of Sidelines/real estate broker, I spend a lot of time in Tryon (and nearby Lake Lure – another gorgeous place!) and last year Libbie Johnson took me on a great historic tour of Tryon and then wrote a story on Tryon for the April 2014 issue of Sidelines

By Jan Westmark The book Sandsablaze is receiving rave reviews! I love to read and I love horses – so if I can combine both and read a great horse story then I am a happy camper. I just finished reading the book Sandsablaze, Grand Prix Greatness from Harrisburg to the Olympics , by Kimberly Gatto, and suffice it to say I am a very happy camper – even without the s’mores! Sandsablaze is a great ride through history. The book kicks off with a foreward by George Morris that is a fascinating look at what life was like in the show jumping world in the 1970s.
