Upperville – Shady News Tuesday A.M.

WELCOME TO THE 159th UPPERVILLE COLT & HORSE SHOW! We love Upperville and while we have not had the pleasure of showing at Upperville, we’ve known some great riders and horses who have performed under the oaks in the hunter rings and across the street in the jumper rings. There is state of the art footing in the main jumper ring – we think that Tommy Lee Jones, show manager par excellent, has done a fantastic job. We had just a moment to say hello to Tommy yesterday – he’s so busy all the time, but if you know him, give him a warm hello, because he and all his people, volunteers and staff, put their hearts and souls into making Upperville a great great show. Here are two links to visit: WUSA9.com story about Upperville and a WUSA9.com Upperville slide show of photos by Teresa Ramsey, official Upperville photographer (with seven taken by yours truly at the end!)

Hero & Emily, best friends from AARC Paws Patrol, Inc. wasGeorgia’s only Delta Society Pet Partners ® affiliate volunteer group, promoting the healing human-animal bond from its inception until 2009. Even though the name and corporation were retired due to lack of funds to pay staff when I retired as director, many of us are still proud to continue our chosen volunteer path for those who need us. We accompany our animal teammates to visit those who are lonely, ill or disabled. Through their unconditional love and acceptance, the animals have brought smiles to autistic children’s faces, affection to lonely people in nursing homes, and the will to interact to the disabled. One of Delta Society Pet Partner® Teams, Marty Harris & Happy Jack Albany, GA We are proud to represent the Delta Society ®, a non-profit organization and the leading authority in Animal Assisted Activity and Therapy development. The Pet Partners ® program tests and registers human-animal teams, qualifying them to serve in hospitals, nursing homes, schools and treatment centers

Sunday, June 03 2012
by Editor
Georgetown, KY – On Friday June 1 st Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement facility in Georgetown, hosted a welcome reception and press conference for media and fans to meet new retiree Rapid Redux. Despite rainstorms and a drastic drop in temperature, About 35 journalists, photographers, and fans–some from as far away as New York– came out to see the 6-year-old gelding that holds the modern North American record for consecutive wins by a Thoroughbred. In January of this year, Rapid Redux, a Kentucky bred, earned his 22 nd victory at Laurel Park before he was retired from racing. He bested the 19-race win streaks set by Peppers Pride and 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta by three. Claimed for $6,250 in 2010 by owner Robert Cole, Jr and trained by David Wells, Rapid Redux finished his career with 28 wins from 42 lifetime starts

Victory caps convincing Borde Hill weekend for Halliday
Saturday, June 02 2012

Liz at the Borde Hill Horse Trails in the UK An excellent showing from each of her four horses helped Liz Halliday produce a sensational Eventing performance at Borde Hill Horse Trials last weekend that included victory in her BE100 section. Just 30 minutes from her base at Chailey Stud Equestrian Centre in East Sussex, Borde Hill offered Liz the ideal opportunity to give four of her less experienced horses a run after a largely washed-out month of May. That ‘home advantage’ certainly seemed to help Benny (Benaughlin Little Hero) who dominated his BE100 section on Saturday thanks to an overall score of just 27.4. Having not competed since mid-April, Liz was particularly pleased with his all-round performance which included a strong Dressage, clear Show Jumping and near-perfect Cross Country round that featured just 0.4 time fault points. Sunday saw Halliday’s remaining horses entered in Novice sections and once again all three were in terrific form

It is surely coming as no surprise to you that McLain Ward won the Grand Prix on Thursday night, but I thought you’d like to see how he did it. This is a photo essay about Ward and his mount, since 2010, Antares F, an 11 year old Wurtemburger grey gelding ( http://www.theequinest.com/breeds/wurttemberger ) and Margie Engle and her horse, Indigo, a 12 year old gelding who was second. Chill R Z, ridden by Charlie Jayne was third; Cedric, ridden by Laura Kraut was fourth; and Vornado Van Den Hoendrik, ridden by Jessica Springsteen was fifth. Less than one second separated first and second place in the jump off, Ward having ridden it in 34.32 seconds and Engle in 35.28. McLain Ward and Antares F The First Round Leaving the ring after the first round, Ward communes with his horse. The Jump Off begins….. …..and ends. Leaving the ring after the awards ceremony and victory gallop. Margie Engle and Indigo in their first round. AHP Conference: Counting Down to Awards Dinner

Okay, we’ll admit it. We don’t know how to relax. We think that we have been racing from deadline to deadline for so many years that we have totally forgotten how to relax and enjoy “leisure” – and that’s what this conference is, compared to our real life. This is leisure.

Thursday, May 24 2012
by Editor
Fred Stone, one of the best known equine artists in the world, will be at the Memorial Day Classic for the $10,000 Memorial Day USHJA International Hunter Derby, a benefit for After the Finish Line , a charity providing funds to Thoroughbred rescue organizations. This is the second year in a row After the Finish Line has partnered with the Memorial Day Classic. “This is a wonderful opportunity to work with the horse show people to raise awareness of transitioning off-the-track Thoroughbreds into second careers as hunters and jumpers,” said Dawn Mellen, President of After the Finish Line. On Sunday afternoon (May 27), there will be a silent auction that opens at 2:00 p.m. on the show grounds at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. At 5:00 p.m., Fred Stone will be on hand to sign his newest commissioned work, a poster of Eric Lamaze and Hickstead. ”This is the official poster of Equine Canada, created to raise funds to send the Canadian Equestrian Team to the 2012 London Olympics,” said Fred Stone. “Those attending the Memorial Day Classic will be the first in all of North America to purchase this poster of Hickstead and Eric Lamaze.” The poster bears the signature of both Fred Stone and Eric Lamaze, and Fred will personally sign posters purchased at the Memorial Day Classic. The exclusive offering is limited to 200 prints at a special price of $30 per print, half of which will be donated to After the Finish Line. Show jumping superstars Hickstead and Eric Lamaze are well known in the hunter/jumper world, and the ability to be among the first 200 people to own a signed copy of the print is a unique opportunity

A Second Chance is in Need of Dog and Cat Foster Caretakers
Tuesday, May 22 2012
by Editor
DOG AND CAT FOSTER CARETAKERS NEEDED A Second Chance Puppies and Kittens Rescue in Royal Palm Beach, Florida is currently in need of temporary foster homes to care for dogs and cats rescued from shelters and awaiting their forever homes. Fostering an animal is a fun and rewarding way to earn community service hours or simply to give back and help animals. A Second Chance Puppies and Kittens Rescue provides all necessary food, supplies, and medical care for animals in foster care. Foster Caretakers simply care for the animals in their homes until they are adopted by their forever families! A Second Chance Puppies and Kittens Rescue specializes in saving pregnant and nursing dogs and cats and orphaned puppies and kittens. Too often when these animals are left at shelters, they are euthanized because of overcrowding and lack of resources. These facilities do not have the ability to hold onto animals that are not immediately adoptable and, without rescue many of these animals do not have a chance. With a local network of over 100 foster homes, A Second Chance Puppies and Kittens Rescue has saved thousands of dogs and cats in just under five years. But with your help we can do so much more! If you are willing to open your heart and home to an animal in need, please contact us! ADOPT * DONATE * FOSTER * VOLUNTEER Write Us: A Second Chance Puppies and Kittens Rescue P.O. Box 211924 Royal Palm Beach, FL 33421-1924 Call Us: (561) 333-1100 Email Us: info@asecondchancerescue.org We are in need of Courtyard Kennels for nursing moms, Microchip Scanners, a 7,500 watt generator for our Adoption Shuttle, and our biggest wish of all is to get a Cargo Van which we can use for animal transport.
