HERO

Monday, June 04 2012 by Editor
Hero & Emily, best friends from AARC Paws Patrol, Inc. wasGeorgia’s only Delta Society Pet Partners ® affiliate volunteer group, promoting the healing human-animal bond from its inception until 2009. Even though the name and corporation were retired due to lack of funds to pay staff when I retired as director, many of us are still proud to continue our chosen volunteer path for those who need us. We accompany our animal teammates to visit those who are lonely, ill or disabled. Through their unconditional love and acceptance, the animals have brought smiles to autistic children’s faces, affection to lonely people in nursing homes, and the will to interact to the disabled.   One of Delta Society Pet Partner® Teams, Marty Harris & Happy Jack Albany, GA We are proud to represent the Delta Society ®, a non-profit organization and the leading authority in Animal Assisted Activity and Therapy development. The Pet Partners ® program tests and registers human-animal teams, qualifying them to serve in hospitals, nursing homes, schools and treatment centers

Second Observation Event a Challenge

Monday, June 04 2012 by Editor
Kelly Farmer on Red Sky Laura Kraut: Going for Gold Again By Halie Greening Laura Kraut strode into the Show Manager’s Office with a smile on her face and some definite pep in her step, if she was nervous about the second Observation Event that would help determine the team for the 2012 Olympics, it didn’t show. Laura and Cedric, the brilliant grey 14 year-old gelding who are currently ranked 4th on the Olympic Show Jumping Team’s long list, will do their best to prove they should make the trip to London. Right off the bat Laura expressed her love for the sport asserting that the best part being a Grand Prix rider isn’t the fame or the tremendous places she gets to travel, “the best part is the horses.” The opportunity to be a part of one of the strongest duos in show jumping, and having a horse as extraordinary as Cedric is definitely something to be thankful for. As Laura signed her and her pal Cedric’s name on the Breyer model of Cedric, I enjoyed a great conversation with the 2008 Olympic U.S. Team gold medalist about her goals for the future for herself and some potential new rides. She is currently riding the 9 year-old KWPN Dutch Warmblood, Woodstock O as well as the striking Belmont. Although these horses have some very high standards to live up to, Devon Horse Show managers David Distler and Peter Doubleday concurred that these horses are both “really cool.” Hopefully their “coolness” carries through as Kraut has great faith that they will live up to her other superb rides.  If all goes well she plans to take them to The World Equestrian Games of 2014 in France, and the 2016 Olympic Games to take place in Rio de Janeiro .  Laura also has high hopes for her student Jessica Springsteen.

Starstruck at Devon

Monday, June 04 2012 by Editor
Picture this – I’m standing at the in-gate just before the course walk for the Idle Dice Open Stakes Class at Devon.  I have a Press Pass (Sidelines has hooked me up!), and I am trying to play it cool, but internally I am bouncing off the walls.  I am literally standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Beezie Madden and Margie Engle.  Everywhere I look, I see Olympic greatness.  I stand at the gate, snapping photos with my pathetic, amateurish, digital camera, at the literal legends of our sport who are counting out strides just feet from me.  It feels like I’m through the Looking Glass. Inside the Press Box, I stick out like a sore thumb.  But, I am almost just as thrilled to be shoulder-to-shoulder with real equine journalists (there are people who do this for a living, how cool is that!).  I quickly catch on that nobody really claps in there, and it’s all very routine.  They take notes, snap photos, and idly chat about how long the winner interviews will likely take.  Once again, I find myself trying to play it cool. The class ends, and I have taken dutiful notes on every round, where the rails fell, and which rides I liked.  I’ve tried to take photos, but once again the pathetic camera has utterly failed me.  (I vowed about a hundred times to upgrade that particular piece of equipment as the class went on.)  When I sat down to write this post, though, I realized nobody tunes in to Tucker the Wunderkind for class results and you’ve seen my photography skills .  Instead, check out the photos from Sidelines blogger Beth Harpham at Chasin’  - they are fantastic.  And here’s the good stuff, from my perspective. Katie Dinan did something amazing at the beginning of her Open Stakes round that I won’t soon forget.  She came to the first line, fences three and four (which, it goes without saying, were larger-than-life), and right in the middle of the line, her horse Nougat du Vallet let out a HUGE buck, about two strides out from the monster oxer that was fence four.  Katie just got him straight again and cleared the oxer with no problem at all.  They had just announced, moments ago, that she was Best Child Rider at Devon in ’09.  Just in case anyone forgot that she’s not only awesome, but also just a kid.  I was totally impressed, and vowed to remind myself of that moment the next time Tucker flicks an ear at a fly and I think it’s a good excuse to make a circle

A Bluegrass Welcome for Superstar Gelding Rapid Redux at Old Friends

Sunday, June 03 2012 by Editor
Georgetown, KY – On Friday June 1 st  Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement facility in Georgetown, hosted a welcome reception and press conference for media and fans to meet new retiree Rapid Redux. Despite rainstorms and a drastic drop in temperature, About 35 journalists, photographers, and fans–some from as far away as New York– came out to see the 6-year-old gelding that holds the modern North American record for consecutive wins by a Thoroughbred. In January of this year, Rapid Redux, a Kentucky bred, earned his 22 nd  victory at Laurel Park before he was retired from racing. He bested the 19-race win streaks set by Peppers Pride and 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta by three. Claimed for $6,250 in 2010 by owner Robert Cole, Jr and trained by David Wells, Rapid Redux finished his career with 28 wins from 42  lifetime starts

Victory caps convincing Borde Hill weekend for Halliday

Saturday, June 02 2012 by Editor
Liz at the Borde Hill Horse Trails in the UK An excellent showing from each of her four horses helped Liz Halliday produce a sensational Eventing performance at Borde Hill Horse Trials last weekend that included victory in her BE100 section. Just 30 minutes from her base at Chailey Stud Equestrian Centre in East Sussex, Borde Hill offered Liz the ideal opportunity to give four of her less experienced horses a run after a largely washed-out month of May. That ‘home advantage’ certainly seemed to help Benny (Benaughlin Little Hero) who dominated his BE100 section on Saturday thanks to an overall score of just 27.4. Having not competed since mid-April, Liz was particularly pleased with his all-round performance which included a strong Dressage, clear Show Jumping and near-perfect Cross Country round that featured just 0.4 time fault points. Sunday saw Halliday’s remaining horses entered in Novice sections and once again all three were in terrific form

AHP Conference: Counting Down to Awards Dinner

Saturday, June 02 2012 by Editor
Okay, we’ll admit it. We don’t know how to relax. We think that we have been racing from deadline to deadline for so many years that we have totally forgotten how to relax and enjoy “leisure” – and that’s what this conference is, compared to our real life. This is leisure.
