Equestrian Philosophy Part II – Training the horse or the client
Monday, February 25 2013
by Editor
When I am evaluating a behavioral issue in a horse it is usually because the trainer cannot fix a problem. Problems such as a horse bucking, refusing to go forward , spinning out from under the person, grinding teeth or head flipping are common behavior issues with common causes. But the in order to truly fix the problem, the trainer must understand more about the horse’s natural behaviors, learning ability, communication and intelligence. Trainers often do not have time to spend with horses, especially if they are at a horse show and need to get the horse ready for a client to ride

By Jan Westmark-Allan We watched the Florida sunrise – now we are looking for horses! The sunrise on Ormand Beach, Florida this morning I am headed to Wellington and the Winter Equestrian Festival today – and will kick off my week by attending the “Who Rein’s Supreme?” event supporting the Equestrian Aid Foundation which is tonight at the Jim Brandon Equestrian Center. Sidelines Magazine is the media sponsor for the event – and it will be fun a great evening!! The event is sold out, which is great news for the Equestrian Aid Foundation! I can’t wait to see all the reiners

Please Vote for Sidelines…So I Can Thank the Academy (And All Of Our Friends!)
Wednesday, January 16 2013

By Jan Westmark-Allan Vote for Sidelines in Category 8 I spend an inordinate amount of time on the Sidelines Magazine Facebook page, not to mention the website and blogs. So when Sidelines was named a finalist in the Equestrian Social Media Awards, I let out a big cheer!! All that work – and we have been recognized!! I immediately thought about all the acceptance speeches you hear at the Academy Awards and other awards shows…”I’d like to thank the Academy…” (I do have interns that help me with the Facebook page and website – including April Leonard, Mindy Cortez and Christina Alex – thank you, thank you!!) And of course Bill Tatgenhorst at Sidelines, my website sidekick!! I would certainly like to thank all of the Sidelines “friends” who keep our Facebook page active and also those who read our blogs and visit our website. Now I have one more thing to ask our “friends” – to click on the link for the Equestrian Social Media Awards and vote for us

By Jan Westmark-Allan The Dover catalogue and Sidelines Magazine in my mailbox on the same day – that’s a GOOD day! I live in a tiny town in Western North Carolina mountains. Think Mayberry and you have pictured it correctly! Our town is so small that our mail is not delivered to our houses but to a little 100-year old red former schoolhouse that is now our Post Office.

It was 1982, and I was 17 years old. I was one of the kids that could win the finals — one of the riders people threw out as a possible winner of the biggest equitation class on earth and quite possibly the single biggest class a junior rider could win
