Have you ever noticed how the track around the outside of a ring, just next to the rail, quickly becomes packed down after just a few rides?

Warm-Up Ring Etiquette
Monday, February 18 2013
by Editor
Warm-up rings can be chaotic, busy, and full of unfamiliar horses and riders. As such, they’re one of the most challenging parts of horse shows that you’ll have to navigate. Make sure you’re familiar with warm-up ring etiquette to make your warm-up time more effective and less stressful.

Jeff Cook Clinic Recap
Wednesday, January 02 2013
by Editor
Wayyy back in November, Tucker and I took a lesson with Jeff Cook, one of my favorite trainers, at our friend’s beautiful farm, Stoneleigh (Tucker and I have farmsat there a few times). Since Tucker was just getting back to work after time off to recover from popping his splint, and wasn’t quite at his usual fitness level, we took it easy but still got some valuable feedback from Jeff, which I’ve been meaning to share with you. You may recall I was a little MIA for a while because of a trial that lasted all summer… this had the unintended side effect of leaving Tucker looking generally like a wildabeast. So, before we could go anywhere we needed a little Extreme Makeover: Horse Edition . Before: (everyone always looks grumpy in the before photo) After: So much better! I’m not sure Tucker fully appreciated my efforts given that it was a little chilly that morning for a bath, but you know, the price of beauty and all that…

Tucker Fixes Everything!
Tuesday, September 04 2012

Wow. I’m so sorry, I let the entire month of August go by without even a word. I hope you’ve all enjoyed the end of your summers… I’m still in trial hell, but there’s light at the end of the tunnel at the moment, which means those of you who are still willing to follow along will be treated to much more frequent blog posts. I promise! I have about two more weeks of trial left, and then the dust should settle.

My Niece’s First Pony Ride
Monday, May 07 2012
by Editor
This may be my most favorite blog post ever — I finally got my 2-year-old niece, Ella, on a real pony (for those of you who are new to the blog, I have been hatching this evil plan encouraging Ella to love ponies since roughly a few months after she was born). It was quite possibly my happiest day as an aunt. She loved it! The pony in question is Fuzzy, who belongs to a friend of mine. Some of you may remember him from this post , in which Tucker fell madly in love with Fuzzy. Fuzzy was so wonderful all afternoon for his pony ride. He apparently loves little girls just as much as they love him. He was a perfect gentleman. (I may also be in love with him. It’s easy to do.) We arrived at the barn mid-afternoon, my niece bearing a bag full of apples and carrots and VERY excited about the prospect of ponies. Once we actually met Fuzzy, we were a little bit less brave, which I expected. So I gave Ella some time to get better acquainted with the pony, and she helped me lead him around the ring. Fuzzy, saint that he is, stopped on a dime every time she wanted to come up and get a better look at him, and soon she had pet him all over and was voicing her strong desire to ride. After holding her up a few times so she could see the saddle and where her feet would go, and where she’d hold the reins, she was ready to climb on. It was all smiles from here on out. That’s grandma (my mom) in the background. She has been down this road before… she knows a pony-crazed kid when she sees one. Note that her heels are already down. Never had a lesson. I believe she’s a natural. This is my favorite photo of the day. The blissed-out-I-love-ponies face. And this would be my second-favorite. Or maybe this one… Or this one…. Is there anything cuter than a tiny child grooming a tiny pony?
