By Jan Westmark-Allan A wonderful foal photo sent in by Kristin Zabawa of Oregon. Is there anything cuter than a foal? Tiny whiskers, tiny ears – running, leaping, sleeping, playing with mommy!! I guess the only thing cuter than a real-life foal is a great photo of a foal – which is why Sidelines Magazine is holding the “Who’s Your Daddy” Foal Photo contest.

Written by Anna Ford (Thoroughbred Program Director) One of the hardest things about the day to day happenings at New Vocations is raising funds to run the program. Each year our goal is to raise more funds then the year before so we can in turn increase the number of horses helped. It hasn’t been easy but somehow we have managed to reach that goal year after year. While I would much rather be at the barn working with the horses, I find myself on the road every other week soliciting new donors and meeting with our current donors. We have several fundraisers that I encourage people to support throughout the year but one of my favorites is the New Vocations Breeders’ Cup Pledge.

By Jan Westmark-Allan The love of a horse or pony can be a powerful thing in a young girl’s life! It’s almost difficult to put into words the importance that horses play in our lives - they are our joy, a warm shoulder to cry on, our therapy, our love, our exercise, our friend, our social outlet and our soul mates!! Imagine if you were an underprivileged young girl with a load of bad stuff in your life and someone introduced you to the great and amazing love of a horse or pony. Enter a program called Heroes N Horses – a program that helps young girls and changes their lives for the better. The Heroes N Horses program has done so much for these young ladies, but now the program itself is in trouble! Heroes N Horses has two locations – one in Ocala, Florida and another in Wellington, but they might have to close down if they can’t raise funds

Must Share Story From Eventing Nation
Wednesday, October 31 2012

Okay, we know – we’ve been AWOL, so to speak, since the Warrenton Horse Show & Warrenton Hunt Night, but it’s been wickedly crazy and now, in the aftermath of frankenstorm Sandy, we have power back in record time and we spent a few minutes catching up on what’s happening out in the world… One thing we never thought we’d see is a piece of fiction (well, truth is always stranger than fiction) on Eventing Nation, but that’s exactly what you will read when you click into Eventing Nation’s Visionaire: Happy Halloween: A Ghost Story – highly recommended reading! This tale called “Charlie Feathers” by Shelby Weeks packed a lot into a short story, and it’s all positive – about how spirits can continue to do “good” from the other side of the rainbow bridge… Kudos to Visionaire for running this piece in their Eventing Nation post! By the way, we sure would love to know more about Shelby Weeks who has written other pieces of short fiction, but we can’t find a website or even a bibliography (in a hurry as usual, deadlines, of course). So, if y’all have any info on the writer Shelby Weeks, please send it to us at: laurengallops@gmail.com Happy Hallowe’en & blessings to everyone in the aftermath of the Sandy storm! We managed to get in a few days chasing around the countryside with a lovely pack of Thornton Hill Hounds and even one day out with Old Dominion Hounds (not this photo). This image is from the Thornton Hill meet before a Sunday cubhunt in September with good friends (l-r) Brandy McDonald of The Fine Equine: polo pro Martin Maldonado of Polo at Blue Rock; yours truly (we really must find our hairnet, buy new one or, preferably, cut our curly locks!), and Kim Love of Polo at Blue Rock.
