We blanket our horses to keep them warm each winter, but do you consider your horse’s safety when you blanket him? An ill-fitting or poorly adjusted blanket can actually endanger your horse; here are some things to remember as you dig out your blanket collection for the winter.

Victoria Colvin and Melissa Rudershausen Honored as East Conference Winners of the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Jumper Classic Series Lexington, KY-November 5, 2013-Frances Land of Alpharetta, GA, won the $50,000 Show Jumping Hall of Fame Series Championship Grand Prix, presented by Elizabeth Miller and The Dinan Family, The Oken Family, The Straus Family, and the Tyree Family at the Alltech National Horse Show.

The USC Aiken Eventing Team had another fun outing at the Full Gallop Farm Horse Trials this past Sunday. Hannah, Matti, Robin and I jump judged Prelim through Beginner Novice.

American Katie Dinan and “Nougat” Glide to Victory in the $250,000 Alltech Grand Prix

[LEXINGTON, Ky.] – Calling the win a major stepping stone in her competitive career, 20-year-old Katie Dinan of Wellington, Fla., claimed the $250,000 Alltech Grand Prix Saturday night at the Alltech National Horse Show . Only a sliver of a second separated Dinan and her mount Nougat du Vallet from other top contenders in a jump off round of four riders representing three countries. A total of 36 riders competed in Saturday’s prime-time Alltech Grand Prix, which awarded a $62,500 first prize.

Winner Lives Up to Name With Daryl Portela at Alltech National Horse Show

Lexington, KY – October 31, 2013 - “I was very excited to come here because I’ve never shown here,” Portela said. “I didn’t get to show last year because I ride with Jimmy Torano, and he judged last year. After [the Pennsylvania National Horse Show] and [the Washington International Horse Show] this year I was pumped and ready and wanted to come and do well.” Portela had previously shown at the National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden, so she had high expectations coming to the Alltech National Horse Show in its new home at the Kentucky Horse Park.

Combating Urine Odors in Stalls

It can be tempting to close up your barn during the winter to try to keep your horses warm. But there’s a dangerous side to reduced ventilation, and it’s coming from within your stalls: Urine odors can quickly build up and provide a less than ideal health environment for your horse. On Sunday I trailered Tucker over to Alicia’s for a jumping lesson and he was such a good boy. I had a discussion with a friend recently about cross-training or doing different things with your horse, and we agreed that while you can’t have a top level show horse who also trail horse and also a dressage horse, you can do lots of different types of riding and activities and end up with an all-around awesome horse who is fun to ride no matter what you’re doing
