Desperate for some Lovin!

Last week during a routine trail ride Marysville trainer, Amy Allison, captured some beautiful photos of our boy Doin My Best. This 5 yr old gelding, once insecure and even fretful of the great outdoors is now excelling as a trail horse. It has taken a couple months but with the help of a buddy and consistent routine he has come to enjoy the wide open spaces. He is now able to go out with a buddy or alone and have a leisurely stroll around the farm, down the road, and through the hay fields. Best has a lot to offer a rider. He is a tall 16.1h+ elegant gelding who is coming out of his shell. Strategically placed in the first stall by the tack room Best begs for attention every time someone walks by. He truly loves his new life and is longing for a person to call him their own.

Introducing 2 year old, 15.2 1/2hh Thoroughbred filly “French Cotton” who’s now available for adoption from our Marysville, Ohio facility! This young mare has really shown us what she is made of considering her first week of work was in an indoor arena during the 50 mph winds of last week’s hurricane.

Written by Anna Ford (Thoroughbred Program Director) One of the hardest things about the day to day happenings at New Vocations is raising funds to run the program. Each year our goal is to raise more funds then the year before so we can in turn increase the number of horses helped. It hasn’t been easy but somehow we have managed to reach that goal year after year. While I would much rather be at the barn working with the horses, I find myself on the road every other week soliciting new donors and meeting with our current donors. We have several fundraisers that I encourage people to support throughout the year but one of my favorites is the New Vocations Breeders’ Cup Pledge.

Tuesday, October 30 2012

As the days are growing shorter and colder, it seems fall has crept up on us, so it is a good reminder to keep an eye on your horse’s weight as they start to expend more energy growing their winter coats. Photo Courtesy of Audrey C. Crosby Photography At the beginning of September all of our horses seemed to drop weight quickly and had grown hair over night

Written by Amy Allison (Ohio Thoroughbred Facility Manager/Trainer) A horse update came across my desk the other day that just made me smile as so many of them often do. It was of 2004 Thoroughbred gelding Native Tongue with show ribbons hanging from his bridle.

A New Vocations Success Story: One of the many rewards of working at New Vocations is reading the thousands of updates from our adopters and hearing about how our retired racehorses are thriving in their new homes. Here is one of those updates from adopter Heidi Vandemotter.

Sky Tiger – Available for Adoption

Introducing 5 year old, 16.2hh Thoroughbred gelding “Sky Tiger” who is available for adoption at the New Vocations’ Lexington, KY facility! Sky raced 11 times with 1 win, 1 second, and 1 third place finish. This son of Sky Mesa is the prince of our barn. He loves to be pampered and treated royally; he finds flies offensive, but tolerable, and likes to stay mostly clean.

New Vocations A Team Effort
Tuesday, September 25 2012
by Editor
We are frequently asked “what is the secret to your adoption success?” The answer to this question is not a short one. There is a lot that goes into New Vocations successfully adopting out over 400 retired racehorses a year. The one major factor to our success that I would like to spotlight is the teamwork that goes on daily behind the scenes. It is the passionate commitment by our team of underpaid and over worked employees and volunteers that keeps New Vocations going. New Vocations was started in 1992 by Dot Morgan when she set out to provide a safety net for horses retiring from the racetrack so they might find a home and therefore have a future.
